It doesn't say the role is for women, it says the agency is female-led. If you're a dude excited about working at a female led agency, why wouldn't you apply for this role? In fact I know just the person.
This may sound bad but Iโm being totally serious - smart women usually arenโt as subconsciously sexist as old rich white men. Iโm completely sure that these people want the best on their team and recognize that a team of all women provides little perspective. I think youโre overthinking it, and this Shawn guy is the one pointing it out, not them!
Iโm a man and my absolute best bosses have been and continue to be women. Iโve only worked with two male bosses - who were not my direct bosses, but were many levels up - who were great and not threatened by me. Go work for women. ๐๐ผ๐๐ผ๐๐ผ
As the OP here, I was in no way blaming the women. I was merely saying that the wording of the post went out of its way to mention the all-female creative leadership and (assumed) all-female focus of the agency, which might dissuade someone like me, a male, from applying as eagerly.
The only thing really bothersome is the last word. Word.
Yeah this is 0% discouraging to males. Honestly at this point I would love to work at an entirely women-led agency because I wouldnโt have to deal with the aggressive alpha football coach BS that 10% of male CDs think motivates young male creatives.
Iโm a man and if I saw that Iโd assume they were looking for more women and wouldnโt bother. Most of my superiors are women and it doesnโt bother me at all, but that wording would make me think, โ oh they want women. Iโll keep looking."
Consider how many women are feeling that same sense of discouragement at not given the chance men are. And they arenโt told โwe would prefer if you were a manโ in plain terms, but they are being told it all the time, all the same. Not because of a conspiracy. But because all the male CCOs and ECDs and GCDs and CDs and ACDs feel more comfortable and into what guys write or come up with or think or say. Because they see more of themselves in them, because they arenโt worried about getting in trouble for going out to drinks with them, probably other things. And we all know relationships are how office atmospheres work. So it feels like, from the get-go, Iโm running a race with one broken ankle. At least, this is how I and the other women I work with feel, much of the time. I am sure your feeling is true and legitimate and not meant to be shitty, but it just shows how infrequently you must feel discouraged based on your gender. However, that is a feeling that is common for women in the ad industry.
@SP1 I mean in the posting itself. Or if it said "all leadership roles are held by people of color", that would probably be discouraging for white people who would have otherwise wanted to start there and move into upper management. The phrasing makes it sound exclusive and not necessarily merit-based for everyone. That's probably not the case (since the company would open themselves up for lawsuits), but that's how it reads based on how it's currently written.
@AS1 I never said it was outright discrimination, just that it could be interpreted as that way (by people like OP). Companies usually go out of their way to not point out homogeny in any leadership levels in order to avoid any appearance of potential discriminatory hiring. Again, I'm sure the company knows this, and the recruiter is just taking liberties...
Iโve seen ones that actively discourage men from applying, but this ainโt one
This thread def needs more opinions
Director 1: โWhy isnโt there a WHITE history month??โ ๐๐๐๐ Bro, if you donโt get why the fact that an agency is female-fronted is worth mentioning in your recruitment copy in this day and age then you are probably part of the problem.
Director 1 - how come women don't feel like that about agencies that are all male led? Just because they don't say it in the post, doesn't mean articles about the male leadership don't come out.. Does being male give it the privilege of going unnoticed? I know a man who is extremely excited about working for all female leadership, that goes against your assumption, doesn't it? You clearly think there could be a stereotypical response to this - validating the stereotype itself
@C3 @ACD3 So now we're debating whether other people's feelings are valid? Based on some of the responses in this thread, the answer to OP's question is "yes, that job posting is discouraging to some men." Saying that people aren't allowed to feel that way is silly.
WONT SOMEONE THINK OF THE MEN FOR ONCE IN HUMAM HISTORY??
What if it's all about SEO
Why is it I can never see what people are posting on here???
If theyโre in a โcreative turn aroundโ maybe they should be looking for dudes
@ACD3 you're missing the point entirely. I'm all for female-led companies (and have worked at several), but to explicitly say that ALL upper management is female may be off-putting to men who would be interested because they think they won't have a chance in those roles (which is what OP was asking). If you don't understand that, I don't know how else to "mansplain" it to you.
Tbh, I read it and didnโt have that same takeaway. I presume that added detail is a big plus point for some, and would immediately turn off those that arent a good fit to begin with. Disclaimer: I am a woman
I donโt see anything wrong with the post. Love that they mention the all female leadership. Makes the place have something extra. I had never heard of Corkyy but itโs now on my radar! Hope they find people who are awesome and supportive, men or women
