Im an associate at a small firm. I’m potentially referring a significant contingency fee lawsuit to another firm. Can I have the other firm pay a referral fee to me directly to me if they prevail or settle? Do I have an obligation to notify my firm I’m referring a case? I know my firm doesn’t have any conflicts because we are a small firm with very few clients in a completely different practice area. My state bar’s ethics rules doesn’t address this. Thoughts?

At an ID firm, but doing 30% ID, and the rest is appellate work + appellate work in a different area of law. Team is amazing—well known people in the legal community. I love appellate work, want to be a state ct appellate judge ultimately. But I’m scared I’m locking myself into ID. What should I do?
