I'm at 145k with 6 YOE supporting the IC. Should I even entertain GS roles in the IC and would I be able to retain salary compensation?

It's gonna be hard to make close to comparable comp as a GS in the IC. The IC is notorious for bringing in experienced external hires at ridiculous levels like 10s and 11s, which would put you way off track on comp.

To hit $145, you'd need to come in at a 14-7 or 15-1, both of which are incredibly unlikely as an external hire in the IC, especially one who only has 6 YOE. I wouldn't go so far as to say it's literally impossible, just highly, highly unlikely.

My spouse is a contractor for the IC as well and they have a higher salary (200k) for 9 YOE. We were considering it for me since I have the lower of the two pays. Will like to stay in the IC for the mission.

If they really want you they’ll figure out how to bring you in at your current salary

funny

You might have better luck looking at places like DARPA and DIU

I wouldn't go for anything lower than a 14

like

Highly unlikely. Certain IC agencies won’t bring on anyone higher than a GS-12 as a matter of principle.

In the best place to go in the IC…. You’re looking at coming in at the bottom for the coolest roles.

Damn, 145 is nice. What level are you at Acn?

Over the long run you’ll catch back up on salary. However, starting out most roles are somewhat limited in what you can come in at. The benefit of Govt work is the pension. Since you are younger, you’re at a good decision point if you want to make that jump.

MD1 I don’t disagree - but you can also put the same pension contributions into a 401K and earn a retirement that way. For me, the differential between my private sector salary vs USG salary, especially when tracked over time, greatly outweighs the pros from the pension I would get after I retire at 62.

Curious if anyone else is or has been in the same boat. I started as an assistant at an entertainment law firm prior to passing the bar. Upon passing, the partner told me they would hire an assistant for me since I now became an associate. That was 1.5 years ago and I am still in the limbo of juggling my own workload + doing assistant roles for my supervisors. I have also had no increase in pay, which is a huge deal for me. Is this normal in the entertainment world? Any suggestions?

How did you tell your manager you’re pregnant? Did it affect pay/promos? And then, subsequently, how did you start letting colleagues know you’re pregnant? Feels awkward to just randomly drop the news in a meeting! I work remotely so it’s hard to tell by video :) I’m 21 weeks and feel like I’ve waited as long as I can to at least notify my manager. I was waiting to negotiate my salary for next year but per company trend that doesn’t get set until January (manager reviews are written in Dec).

Do Leidos, SAIC, and other mostly-fed consulting businesses pay bonuses to all levels? If so, what does a typical bonus target look like? Booz Allen does not pay bonuses until you get to the Senior Associate level (1 step below Director) and I think that impacts employee performance and work ethic pretty dramatically. I’m wondering if not paying bonuses is common to federal contracting because of how the contracts or priced, or if this is something unique to Booz Allen.
