I'm doing a side gig freelance and I'm confused about whether or not I should be mentioning it to my superiors. I'm on point with my tasks and responsibilities at work but I'm concerned that there would be unnecessary deductions that I'm spending more of my focus outside of work if I do share this. What would you do? Are you allowed to have side gigs according to your company's policy? If yes, do you disclose it to your team?

Do NOT ask.

Do NOT tell anyone including coworkers

Do not use your FT company issued computer for freelance work

Do not freelance for an agency under the same holding company umbrella as your FT employer.

*Or who may be perceived as a conflict. i.e. Don't do work for Unilever on the side when you're working full time with Procter & Gamble.

Better to just not saying anything at all. I’ve had a conversation with a higher up my previous agency (they weren’t my boss or anything, we were cool on a personal level) and they basically told me to operate on a “don’t ask, don’t tell” basis

C'mon. No. I talk about some side things I have going but it's more of a hobby so never an issue. If I were to freelance in advertising while working FT, I'd never disclose that work to my FT employer. Ever.

It really depends on your company's policy and the nature of the freelance work you're doing. Many organizations allow side gigs as long as they do not conflict with the company's interests or affect your performance. Maybe go through your employment contract or company handbook for guidelines about outside work.

I let my agency owner know I was taking on a freelance gig once and he got all skeevy about it. Like I was taking advantage of him. There was zero conflict. Not on company time. No impact on my ability to do my job at all. But he said he needed time to think about whether he would allow it. Thing is, I wasn’t asking for permission. I was just letting him know. And the truth is I was going to do the job no matter what he said. I had already started. Still he got all bent out of shape like I was asking to borrow his car or something. The next time it happened, I just kept it to myself. And it was fine. So my suggestion to you is, do the ethical thing. Make sure your side gig is not impacting your regular gig in any way. Then do the work, get paid and be happy.

Don’t do it. Best way to lose your job

OKAY! guess I have my answer :D

Say nothing and freelance away....unless you are working for the competition.

What you do on your own time is none their business. I worked a 2nd job when I had a full time job.

Why would you tell or ask? There is zero benefit to that. Just do you if you can handle both.

Anyone else finding it very difficult to get any enjoyment out of account management these days? Any coping tips? I feel like being an account person is especially difficult in the COVID era since so much of what we do is manage communications, ensure the team is set up well etc. None of this feels particularly fun alone staring into the void of Zoom all day ... but the same pressure is still there. I feel like I spend every week counting down to the weekend which kinda sucks.
