Creativity, by definition, is the joining of two or more things in a way that has never been seen before.
Diversity of experience and thought - driven by diversity of ethnicity, regionality, nationality, sexuality, (to name a few) -- adds to the pool of potential inputs, combinations, and patterns. And thus, diversity broadens and refreshes a team's ability to be truely, and sustainably creative.

Having diverse people is definitely good. As it is More reflective of the populations we advertise to ideally. Unfortunately however almost all our ethnic diversity have very little political or point of view difference. Generally our staffs tend to consist of liberal city dwellers with very little understanding of what life is like outside our circles.
Diversity means inclusion. Race, gender and LGBT are facets of diversity. The most important thing you can teach is that we need to accept differences and act as one.
You could also add some often ignored facets like neuro diversity(introverts, ADHD, Aspies), age, politics, national origin, etc.
I conduct screen by having names on resumes not being disclosed. Interviews are on merit and positions offered based on fit. I have a very diverse staff - my number one goal is to hire the best candidate for the job.
One of my key talking points is this. If anyone listens to the Malcolm Gladwell podcast, Broken Record, Rick Rubin has said, the most interesting music comes from people who have excelled in different genres. So true.

Diversity helps breed empathy. Empathy is a requirement for gaining and understanding an Insight - a human truth. And a great insight is a critical ingredient to a great creative idea that resonates.
Ergo, diversity makes work and the world better
Google articles on diversity and profitability, you'll find data showing diverse companies are like 15% or something more financially stable and more innovative etc (in terms of tangible business benefits it's been proven diversity is related to profitability)
