I’m hoping someone might have some ideas about this- I’m currently five years out of law school with a clerkship, a tax LLM, 3 years of experience doing transactional tax work and a few months of EC/VC experience (which I recently switched to from tax). I like the EC/VC work, but I don’t know how long I want to stay in biglaw. Can anyone weigh in on how employers for in-house roles might look at my experience in a year or two?

Starting my tax LLM (GT) this August 2021 part time. Should be done in 3 years. Are chances switching from big4 to big law after graduating with my tax LLM pretty low since I would have been in Big4 over 5 years by then?

What are the common exit opportunities for IT Audit?

Senior up for promo to manager in audit in next year. Have decided I do not want to be an auditor. Which of these paths do you think is best?

1. Stay 1 more year, exit to industry with manager title.
2. Move to advisory internally, but most likely would have to do one more year in audit and move as audit manager to advisory sr
3. Exit immediately into industry to try for accounting manager title / senior accountant or sr fin analyst
4. Exit immediately to advisory senior at another big 4 firm

I have been Software quality engineer for 12 years with some development experience. I am starting to realize that I can not compete with full times coders for team lead and now want to pivot to product owner or product manager side. Moreso sharing my story than an earnest ask, I feel compelled to share:

I got my job via a series of lucky coincidences. I am a former art student who winded up working for the print production dept of a major media company in what was supposed to be a weeklong gig, and then ended up as a data analyst in the same org.

When I think of what I would be passionate for, I think of a creative field, like fashion, even if I was a similar, administrative role. I’m not sure there’s room to grow here.

Just went under contract for a sfh in Austin. 4.6% rate. Price point is high , at the top of my budget , but seems better than comps. Anyone have a crystal ball and can either reassure me or tell me I caught a falling knife? ;)

It’s my 3 year anniversary of working and I feel so unaccomplished

Due to inflation at its highest rate since 1982, I feel that I am not being paid enough. I can’t afford things on a day to day basis and I think I can make the same amount of money in gig jobs for cash downtown. During the Trump administration I was doing just fine financially - now it costs me so much just to get to work. Is it appropriate to have an inflation conversation with my bosses or should I just pick up shifts as a bartender at night - I need to make about 600 more a month to make it.

A friend has failed the bar a few times, and it has so affected him that he decided he won’t try again. Fortunately he had a career prior to school and returned to it (with massive loan debt). I understand we are in a pandemic, but I can’t help but think of him every time I hear discussion of the diploma privilege bar admission alternative to the bar exam. Do you think this is the best alternative?

Has anyone here pivoted to a chief of staff position? Particularly interested in chief of staff for an in house legal team which may be too niche but generally curious about how you like it? Did you transition from a law firm? Any tips for building management skills—I’ve found that big law attorneys are not the best managers (especially with large scaled projects) which seems to be a critical skill for a chief of staff.
