I’m in industry now and WFH for now (TBD May start going in 2x per week). I made lunch plans with a friend tomorrow and blocked my calendar for 1.5hrs. My boss sent a meeting request for 12:30-1 tomorrow which is obviously during lunchtime. In industry am I not ever supposed to make lunch plans? Am I expected to drop everything if my boss sends an invite request?

I'd decline and say I have an MD appt. Take a look at their schedule and propose an alternate. If it's truly urgent they'll let you know

like

Oh your friend will move on. Try not thinking much about this. There’s next week :)

Decline the invite and say it’s due to a conflict and propose a new time/include your availability in the reply

If the meeting is 30 minutes with higher ups during lunch, a good possibility it will be quite short. If you can keep your lunch plans but duck out for a few moments while you take that call (let your boss know you’ll be away from your desk), I think it’ll be ok.

The "confrontation" is really difficult for me lol. I actually like my current boss and she's been helpful and made me feel like she looks out for me too. But the new opportunity is too good to pass up on (huge increase to pay. No concerns on the team since ive worked with those people in the past in a different company)

I own two commercial rentals in heart of a tier 1 city. Opposite to my space is a mom and pop store. I have become somewhat friends with the owners of the mom and pop store over the years and they would do one of favors for me when I asked to take care of the rentals. Now the commercial rental is vacant and I have been approached by a mid size chain for potential agreement. The dilemma is that the big box store is direct competition to the mom and pop store. What would you do ?
