I'm interviewing at PwC for an L&D role, and my former boss cautioned me that "PwC works people to death." I'm fully aware he has a strong dislike for all things corporate and he was in a completely different line of work than what I'm pursuing.

I'm excited by the potential that working at PwC offers, but I also have a child under 2. Anyone here have experience with PwC? What are the workload and hours really like in L&D?

They obviously work people to death. That's the business model

like

Can you expand on that? I see you're in accounting, is your perspective unique to that line of work or is it a reflection of company wide culture?

To death might be strong but expect to work hard and long hours. They pay accordingly and look great on your resume. I’m gonna do my time and be greatly better off for my suffering.

It’s not so much understaffed is it is the irregularity and hard to predict the nature of some of these deals that I’m on. I’ve had multiple weeks of 30 hour work I’ve had multiple weeks of 65 hours of work. The dumbest little snag in a deal can set work back weeks. They do the best with what they can and I went into this eyes wide open.

PWC = People Working Constantly

I wouldn’t think that you’d be worked to death in L&D. We work people to death because “that’s the nature of client service” and our clients are unreasonable. I don’t think the case would be the same in the more internal roles (L&D, HR, etc), but you also won’t make a “typical” PwC salary because you don’t have those crazy workload hour expectations.

like

Former L&D at Deloitte here - I completely agree with this. Occasionally I’d work long hours for certain projects, but for the most part you can log on/off at 40 hours. I do think that the nature of the business can make you feel as though you should be working long hours to progress, and I did that for several years, but it doesn’t make a difference in the end and we’re not being paid the same way client facing folks are, so it’s going to be on you to kind of remind yourself of that and set boundaries.

Know someone who moved from audit to L&D via secondment and never wanted to go back. Life for them was very chill, barely any overtime or stress.

like

I have a 3 year old and 6 month and am really thankful being able to work from home when not at clients and the flexibility (get them out the door and do bed time as often as possible). I should note I am a director and really did put in some longer hours earlier in my career. I prob average 45 hours year round sometimes 50 (in tax consulting). Really can’t complain as I’ve learned to also say no.

Are you in Canada or USA?

PwC works it’s client service employees to death. The Internal Firm Services/L&D people, no - they work very normal hours.

like

Define “normal.” If you mean 10+ hours a day sure, the hours are normal.

As L&D is not a direct client facing role, the expectations on hours will be much more reasonable and I cannot see how you'd be worked to death. At our shop, I never see the L&D team really work outside of standard hours - sometimes overtime is required, so if they're organising an annual conference, but most of had time it is standard hours. Good luck with the new role.

like

Not the case at PwC for the most part. Every project is client-based, however the client is internal.

Lots of pressure, deadlines…

I worked at PwC and was absolutely worked to death. It’s their entire culture

like

Was and PwC for 8 years, their culture is way more stress and longer hours than KPMG in same field of work. That being said PwC is a huge firm and could vary differently by group but overall Pwc to me was extremely hard stressful and more political than my current employer. Good luck. Their pay may be 5-10% higher but not worth it imo

helpful

PwC worked me so hard I ended up quitting and in therapy. It’s the culture. Wouldnt recommend it unless you love working or alternatively willing to put in long hours for progression

like

Ive been thru this at another firm & its hard. Sorry it happened to you.

L&D sounds cool. Will you be in charge of creating CPE content or just general trainings? I cant see you working that much. I was at PwC for 3 years. It looks good in your resume and you learn alot. Plus the firm is remote pretty much so I assume you won’t need to go to the office.

Which L&D team? Some are better than others.

I spent many years in L&D at PwC US but moved onto another internal role. Hours were long, lots of travel, lots of disfunction, etc.

I don’t work at PWC but at another Big4 most internal (cost center) roles are pretty standard 9-5 but you may occasionally have some busy days + travel to coordinate trainings etc.

I have been in three different internal functions at PwC and have never known anyone to work “standard 9-5.” Its more 8-6+.

The misconception that internal = easy ride is getting old and really irritating.

I worked Pwc and now work at BCG. The amount of slog is almost equal (ended up working 14-15 hrs a day). At least in BCG my pay is much higher - but that doesn’t make my life anymore fun. Choose life if you can :)

@content manager are you applying in Canada or USA?

Fellow enterprise tech sales fish, I’m interested to hear your perspective. I’ve been in a rut lately and seriously considering leaving sales. I think it’s primarily fueled by one thing:
After a 6 mo cycle I closed a large deal (4x the average deal size) prior to receiving delayed 2022 comp plans. The deal counts as a 2022 deal. On last years comp plan it would’ve paid out at 10%. This year it pays out at a measly 4%.

How do you/have you navigated your way through and out of these situations?
