I think large banks are usually a solid and steady option, even with the economic downturn. That being said despite layoffs in tech that industry is still growing at a fairly accelerated rate, so it's not impossible for you to have success there. If you need to bat on the safe side I would go with the banks, but if tech interests you more than take the big swing! Sorry about the baseball metaphors, I coach a softball league.
