I'm making a big jump next week, leaving journalism for a comms role, and honestly, the self-doubt is intense. My brain keeps asking, "Why would you leave when you're doing such good work?" I'm looking forward to better WLB and a social life, which is why I'm making the change in the first place. Any tips for silencing my inner critic, though?

Totally normal to feel that wobble before a big leap. You’re not leaving good work behind—you’re taking your skills somewhere they’ll serve you better. That’s growth. When your inner critic speaks up, remind it: “I’m choosing more peace, not less purpose.” You’ve earned this next chapter.

Self doubt can crop up any time you try something new. As a journalist-turned-comms-pro, I can tell you that comms is not necessarily easier. It depends on the job. Just remember: Your skills translate. You will be just fine. You won’t know everything so don’t expect that. Give yourself space to learn and grow. If you feel uncomfortable, that’s a sign that growth is happening. That’s a good thing. Merde!

Perhaps you could also find another journalism role with another company that places more value on WLB. We need journalists, especially now…

I totally understand and felt the same way when I transitioned from a print journalism role last spring into my current healthcare comms role. I still doubt myself, and sometimes I do find myself missing news -- but I left my journalism role for the same exact reason you did. No matter the work you're doing, you have to prioritize yourself and your needs and advocate for that in any position you hold, whether it's journalism or comms. Journalism IS good work, and very important. But at the end of the day, you have to look out for you and do what's best for you. And you're the only one who knows what that looks like! (Also, your skills as a journalist are 100% transferable and valuable to your new comms role. It'll feel different and may take some getting used to, but you have skills to offer that are going to be vital. You got this!)

Did the same thing years ago, but in a self-employed context. I love comms because I’m part of a team, which journalists rarely are. I still do freelance features (no hard news bc potential for conflict) under my byline. Comms is anonymous so it all works out. Your inner critic will likely silence itself after you settle in and hopefully thrive in your new environment. Best of luck!

like

I don't understand why you're questioning anything. Moving from straight journalism to a comms gig means less work and less stress and you'll be dealing with less challenging characters. And like you say, you'll have more of an outside life. No point in questioning that.

I used to work in news media. It’s a natural progression. You’re not the first or the last to make the jump. You’ll have an advantage making the transition. Walk in eager to learn and grow.

writing down what you are running toward, not just from might help. Your reasons are valid. Better balance is not giving up.. it is choosing yourself.

I would like to say congratulations for getting the job! A journalist can easily do communocations, so please cast aside that doubt and sally forth confidently. After being laid off, I've cast my net wide and keep runnig into roadblocks such as "need 5 years experience in communications." Would be grateful for any tips from you.

Journalism is the best job in the world but I feel like people are less likely to take my work seriously because I am female.
