I’m moving from east to west coast. I can’t decide if I should just throw away all my stuff or not. Has anyone had to make this decision before? What did you end up doing?

Sell it so someone else can use it. Don’t just dump it into a freaking landfill ffs

Or donate to a shelter … gave my stuff to a place for victims of domestic violence and felt like I did a good thing

IKEA-type furniture is probably cheaper to buy new but clothes are almost certainly cheaper to move than replace. Inventory what you have and tally up the replacement costs.

like

Yes. Twice. First time I just shipped what I could in boxes and bought a plane ticket. Second time (I was single for both) I had more but cheap stuff, so I donated most of it. I did a small u-haul and drove cross country and made a trip of it

like

Made a similar move, depends how new your furniture is. Using uhaul pods can be a pretty cost effective way to do it relative to alternatives (mine was around $3.5k for 2 pods including movers in both cities to pick up and load/unload). Definitely take the opp to donate a ton of clothes/toss junk you longer truly need. I’ve moved a lot, furnishing a one bedroom generally will run a little more than that so goes back to how recently you’ve furnished :) hope this helps

I sold everything large such as furniture and tv. Then packed two big bags I flew with and then shipped one big box to arrive a day after I landed.

I moved from west to east coast; kept my favorite furniture only. No regrets, I ended up spending SO much $$ just to replace what I’d thrown away 😞

Purge

Doing a 1,000 mile move this weekend - I have movers but in hindsight definitely just sell the big stuff and pack clothes in boxes to ship. Or donate, I put some stuff on facebook marketplace for free and it’s been effective to get rid of things without a lot of effort on my end

The move might be more expensive than buying new furniture. If you’re able to sell what you can, donate what you can’t, you might be able to break even. Unless you have fancy furniture (which might get “lost” in the move). If you’re shipping your car across, fill it up with whatever is left.

Depending on when you're moving, I wouldn't get rid of everything because it's pretty difficult to get new furniture these days. Seems like every piece of furniture I like is backordered for months.

Just went through this. Sold all furniture, packed the remaining in UPS boxes and shipped. Buying new furniture when I officially move in. Shipping estimates were ~4K with moving company and only ~1700 with UPS and then got to buy new furniture with savings

Has anyone ever asked to renegotiate their salary after starting a job? I’m 2 months into my new job and I have far more responsibilities than what I was told. It’s a lot different than what was relayed in the posting and during the interviews. Additionally, they hired my counter part in as a senior manager which is at least $30k more than what I make. My peer has more experience so I expect that but I feel that I should be paid more, however I don’t want to leave a bad impression… any advice?

Additional Posts in Consulting

Hi all,
I’m currently working for a small technical consulting start-up firm. I make good money, have great benefits, and they seem very happy with the work I’m doing, so I know I could move up quickly. However, tech consulting is definitely not my dream job. I want to get into data analytics, and I have an offer from a big company to do just that. I’ve only been at my current company for about 8 months, but I don’t ever see myself loving this job. How do I know when it’s time to make a change?
