I’d suggest you invest a percentage of that into a flexible REIT, you generate passive and conservative income from revenue generating real estate assets without the worry of management and operations. Been doing this for couple of years now and it’s been good for me, already made by initial capital and now just cruising on compounding.

Don’t out a tax protected fund in a tax deferred product. And real estate is a tough market.
Please explain what you mean by safe growth. How old are you now? How far from 55?
That’s a solid position to be in, and the fact you’re thinking about risk, liquidity, and retirement timing already puts you ahead of most investors.
On the rollover itself—Fidelity and Vanguard are both strong, low-cost custodians. The decision there is less about “better or worse” and more about which interface, tools, and investment access you prefer. Both are widely used for retirement portfolios.
On the investment side, your objective sounds very clear: capital preservation with controlled, steady growth until retirement at 55, then income planning afterward.
A few key points to frame this properly:
Cash-like instruments (like VUSXX or money market funds) are very stable, but they are not designed for long-term growth—they mainly preserve capital and provide yield
Over a 10–20 year horizon, staying too heavily in cash equivalents introduces inflation risk (purchasing power erosion)
A more balanced “safe growth” approach typically combines:
– high-quality bond exposure (stability + income)
– broad equity index exposure (long-term growth engine)
– and a cash buffer for flexibility
Your idea of protecting against downturns is valid—but the real risk over your timeline is often not market crashes, but being underexposed to growth for too long.

S&P 500 or total market index fund.
Maybe add 10% to 20% international exposure for diversification.
OP said specifically safe growth , not the best performing asset class . There's the difference

I would do VOO with a lot of that. Yes, you could lose money but doing VUSXX is going to underperform inflation. VFMV will underperform in a bull market but also won’t lose as much in a down market.
