You’re going to get through this. Your situation is terrible but you aren’t alone. This is the era of layoffs and explaining that to recruiters shouldn’t be a concern.
Land your next role and move onward
But give yourself some grace. Everything will be okay
Layoffs are now part of everyday conversation. The optics aren't so bad, honestly. Take care of yourself, and don't worry too much about the narrative on this point. Work with someone you trust to come up with a narrative that is true, favorable, concise, and easy to say.
Now that inflation is increasing again at the exact same time the job market is tanking, the Fed is stuck in between a rock and a hard place. Everyone can expect to hear more stories like yours more and more in the next few months.
Bad luck, so sorry this happened to you. Nobody will judge, just be honest. I had a succession of layoffs, albeit spaced 2 years apart, and nobody bat an eye.
Literally the same happened to me, only I was employed for a shorter time and have been looking for longer. I'm borderline depressed but what else can you do? You either keep trying or you find something else to pursue. Best of luck, we're going to need it.
So sorry this is happening to you. We are in an era of outrageous layoffs, so hopefully, that can help you craft your story to future employers. Unfortunately, I know several stories like this, and it is deeply unfair that so many have to live with this level of uncertainty. Like others said, try to give yourself grace as you hop back into a new search. Hold the positive feedback from your former colleagues close!
You will land something new eventually, it just takes time! Look into contract positions. Lots of companies are hiring contract right now to save money. Quick and easy interview process and great way to get your foot in the door.
Trumps economy and AI unfortunately
OP is in Canada!
I experienced this. Twice in a row, within a year. Tumultuous time but came out way better in the end. You got this. Good time to lean on/brush up on your faith/spirituality, whatever that is for you.
Having been through this process 5 times (Learning and Development is often seen as the luxury add-on function rather than necessity), I can truly understand how you feel. It's soul destroying. Don't worry about what other companies will think - they understand that redundancies are part of every employer these days and in the company I work for, there have been continuous redundancies globally in the 2 years I have been there.
Depending on the types of role you have, could you put one or both of them on your CV as temporary contracts?
I am so sorry this happened to you. Don't worry about explaining it. Layoffs are part of the norm these days. You will get through this! Keep your head up! ❤️
I’m so sorry this happened but keep talking, networking and give yourself a pat on the back every day because one day it will all shift and you are awesome at what you do.
Keep your head up!!
The exact same happened to me in the same time frame. I chose not to add the last one to my resume though. It was such a short time frame, and doesn't add anything experience wise.
Location?
Toronto!
Isn’t lay off due to lack of business? It’s a cost cutting exercise when the companies turnover is low and they don’t need the labour.
If it was because you weren’t a good employee surely the would have just terminated your employment.
The economy is volatile atm and has been for a while.
Not sure what you do, but maybe you could try something different?
Good luck and chin up’
