It's a good comparison, both are minor holidays.
Remind me to stay out of EY good grief.
If you think this isn't a holiday or isn't important, check this out please.
https://nmaahc.si.edu/explore/stories/why-juneteenth-important
^ why not? It's literally a celebration of people being free. It's not a black only holiday, it's a holiday that acknowledges and celebrates the day that black people were given independence since "independence day" didn't account for them. It should be a holidaybthat acknowledges black people but also is used for a day of connection. Most people who celebrate it considered juneteenth as the TRUE independence day of the United States because everyone was free, not just a spe office demographic.
My company is observing Juneteenth on June 20th, which is my birthday. Lucky me!
Coincidentally I live in Columbus. 🫠
😭😭😭 whew chile the amount of PR Columbus generates within a race war is wild
I think constant asking “isn’t it on a Saturday” when it’s a day in June…the 19th which switches yearly. And is acknowledged on the following business day. This year it’s Monday
Gotta say, I'm kinda surprised at the responses here lol. In hindsight I'm also surprised that I'm surprised - but what can ya do.
I'd liken Juneteenth to Independence Day (as much as Columbus day still holds a place in my heart, it really doesn't deserve to be in the same conversation). My company gives both holidays as observed time off from work (with Juneteenth at least being observed when it's on a weekend, like this year. Don't recall if 4th of July gets that treatment too but I imagine it does)
PP1 Sweetie it is nothing like Independence Day; on Juneteenth all of my peoples were free from chattel slavery. ok?
My company moved to celebrate Juneteenth GLOBALLY! All of our employees (U.S., Canada, UK, Germany, Ireland, etc.) will receive it as a paid holiday, same as Thanksgiving or New Years. If ever it falls on a Saturday, we get Friday off. If it falls on a Sunday, we get Monday off. The CEO has encouraged everyone to use the day to reflect on the history of african americans in this country, and go out and support black businesses. Makes me proud!
Slavery is very much not abolished for all races yet and there are a lot more to be done- I wish there is more support from those with success stories to inspire and help those who are still suffering.
Juneteenth should be considered the true Independence day for the United States as everyone was considered free, not just white people. This should be more widely celebrated. Also Columbus day is no longer Columbus day but indigenous people's day because we don't want to continue celebrating a murdering tyrant.
The point is that most companies aren't going to keep piling holidays on. Other than banking companies and the government, no one I know "celebrates" Columbus day.
I don't think this is a matter of OP missing the point, dear.
I’m sorry, but for all the people who are lost… Columbus Day still exist and in certain parts of the country indigenous tribes use it as a day of protest. If you don’t live in a part of the country who has a large indigenous population, you probably don’t understand why that day may be controversial or why it is different from Juneteenth. Also there were comments above about the celebration of Juneteenth. I have celebrated it my entire life and I live in the state of Washington. I am black, and both sides of my family have celebrated this day for generations. I understand that many people outside of the black community and even those within the black community don’t understand the significance of this day, so I will offer all of them grace as they begin to learn. But this thread should have been fun and lighthearted and instead people are pissed off and I still think that the meme of Soulja Boy is hilarious. I wish we could post things and people be able to have a good time without diminishing a different culture that you’re not used to or exposed to. Also you can simply scroll by if you don’t get it…
Yikes 😬
Aww that’s cute that you actually get time off though!
Very happy for you
Isn’t it always on a Saturday?
Y’all keep crunching them numbers! My Ancestors are going to add TAX!
All holidays are observed holidays for me. I don't actively celebrate any. They're just days off and I'm grateful for them. That's not to say each holiday doesn't have a huge impact on others whether targeted or general. I'm glad others celebrate the true significance of these... my personality, as lackluster as it may be, just doesn't get that excitement or level of pride that others have for the history behind these holidays.
