You can eat pretty well for $52 a day actually in NYC. Try out some ethnic cuisines and not necessarily the overpriced midtown diners

like

Daily allowance and the amount depends on the city. More expensive cities (Seattle, NYC etc) cap out at $52 a day. Lowest I’ve seen is $42 a day

Barely enough for McDonald's in NYC. Hope you like $1 slices!

Nope, they are considered reimbursement for expenses incurred on behalf of your employer

Are per diems taxed as income?

It’s higher in federal, about $60 per day in Columbus, Ohio. I’d imagine it’s higher in NYC. It’s a daily allowance, so whatever you don’t use is yours, and you don’t need to post receipts. Not sure if that’s true of the commercial practice though.

Hope you’re not a drinker lol - I would be broke

To be honest, I eat pretty conservatively priced meals and end up pocketing $80-100 worth of per diem a week.
