I’m thinking about leaving as a third year to teach Legal Writing at my old law school-I want to interact with students again (and help them succeed), I like the academic environment, I have no actual strong desire to seek tenure (so less pressure on me) and I truly don’t think practice is for me long term. Am I missing an obvious pitfall here?

Don’t think so. The above seems pretty well reasoned to me. A lot of lawyers stay as practicing attorneys even though they dislike/hate it because they are risk averse and think that this (practicing) is what they are supposed to do (I’m talking about myself). If you don’t like practicing and like what teaching entails, I say go for it. Life is too short to spend 10-12 hrs a day doing something you dislike. If you have options, explore them. I’m trying to get the courage to switch to a JD- adjacent HR position. I’m thinking like Employee Relations or Investigations (don’t have much employment experience, but the little investigations I do have I liked). Need some established company to take a chance on me.

I’m a 9th year in a mostly litigation-based practice group at a one-tier partnership firm. My group’s billable hours have been low the last few years, so making partner will be nearly impossible, and a counsel position is not viable long-term in my group. What’s the best option here if partnership is the ultimate goal? Try to get a NEP/counsel position at another firm, which is likely difficult in my market, or offer to take a class cut by a few years?
