Any advice on getting started in UX?
Hi Everyone! I am Edith based in Toronto, a self taught UX designer since last year April by completing Google UX certificate. I have been working volunteer UX designer for NPO and participated two UX hackathon competitions. I am actively looking for UX intern/ junior position.
If you have any recommendations, I am open to hear.

I am at avocademy right now the program is great.
I didn't do any extra courses apart from some YouTube and some lectures from udemy courses. I built a portfolio with 2 big case studies that I did based on technical assessments I got from companies I applied for (I never sent the one in and never got the second job as it was UI specialized position and my work showed more UX strengths apparently). I got my first ux job based on these and they were also great learning experiences.
Definitely depends on what exactly your job entails now. My degree is graphic design but I worked in web design for 3-4 years before landing my first UX Design job. I find that a lot of it transferred over and a decent amount is common sense (ie. making things easier for the user and not just making them look pretty) so the only thing I had to learn was the research side of it which I did on the job. It was a small product studio so I was thrown right into things and not treated as a junior. But given you’ve been in the field a lot longer and wouldn’t want to bump down in seniority too much to learn on the job I’d definitely do the UX Bootcamp thing. If you have any current clients/projects that you could try adding some research/UX thinking to you build up your portfolio I would! So you have “real life” case studies and not just whatever comes from your bootcamp.
I went through Avocademy and their career jumpstart program. I was able to get a job within 6 weeks of completing my portfolio, through real clients projects. I didn’t have design or tech experience prior.
Personally, it was a great career move for me and I made great connections with the mentors, peers, and the founder. If you follow their plan and put in the work it is definitely worth doing, especially for the price.
I’ve never done other boot camps so I can’t speak to that, but I really enjoyed my time with the programs.
