Try telling that to today’s social justice warriors
Context matters, as does the audience. I could see how that phrasing would be borderline in this scenario. I could see myself saying something like that with good friends, but I wouldn’t use it where old school execs who might have no problem with the Washington football team’s old name could see it as micro-permission, for example.
I’m old. And white. But I also know history. The term is in the GD Declaration of Independence, and it’s used as a racist slur “He has excited domestic Insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the Inhabitants of our Frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known Rule of Warfare, is an undistinguished Destruction, of all Ages, Sexes and Conditions.”
Don’t say “savages”
nah creatives aren’t just savages they’re crybabies
True for some.

I'm very intrigued by this and want to present another POV.
"Asians can be savages ."
"Whites can be savages."
"Blacks can be savages."
"Aboriginals can be savages."
" Indigenous people can be savages."
That's a clear yes.
"MMA fighters can be savages."
"Soldiers can be savages."
"Police can be savages."
"Teachers can be savages."
"Creatives can be savages."
We're talking about vocation types that might attractive or express some qualities that could be summed up as "savages" in a literal or metaphorical sense.
And in some of those expressions, people don't even call them out. Look back at all the rhetoric against the police. I didn't read anyone suggesting what were said were racially derogatory.
Language and semantics-wise, nowhere in these expressions do they draw a line between the race subset of the vocations to "savages".
They're linking vocations to behavior.
If it was
"Creatives can be ingenious."
"Teachers can be ingenious."
"Police can be ingenious."
We won't draw the connection to "non-whites are ingenious". It's understood that the description applied to the vocation category.
Are you the asshole? Only you can answer that question. But as one person here stated context matters. If you just through that out there just to voice your opinion of creatives, perhaps you need to take a look in the mirror and evaluate your flaws first and determine whether or not you are the one who should judge others. Plus, generalities of any sort will always get you in a heap of trouble. You generalized the characterization of creatives. For example, after 20+ years in this business, I have yet to meet a "savage" creative.
I apologize in advance if this comes across as harsh but if I were you, a little humility would get your further. You're a freelancer from what I can see and there may be a correlation between why you are not a salaried employee and your judgemental behavior.
