Honestly, what helped me most was knowing that billions of others have done this and survived - and done this multiple times. I’m not weaker than the billions who came before me. This is a natural process that many, many women - including my ancestors - have endured.
It’s hard and painful but the golden hour after makes it all a blip. 💛 If you’ve had a healthy pregnancy, you’ll hopefully have a healthy delivery too.
Talk to your support team (partner, anyone you’ve asked to be in the room with you if more) and how you’d like the ideal experience to go - that’ll help them support you. My partner had playlists: 1 calm one for sleep, a daytime one, and a higher intensity one for active labor. I wanted to be able to move around (pace the floor, bounce on the exercise ball, etc) so waited on the epidural, which was painful but also gave me the chance to go on my hands and knees when baby’s heartbeat dropped and she needed a reposition. There’s no trophies for taking on more pain so do it when you’re ready, if you want to. My partner had a hard time seeing me in such intense pain but let me make the call without pressure.
Not everyone’s cup of tea but I asked for a mirror to see baby arriving, which was wild but also helped motivate me to push harder when I could see progress and how close I was to meeting my child.
The hard part is temporary. The feeling of holding your baby afterward will be remembered forever. And then it’s the beginning of a whole new adventure. Good luck with your delivery!
I highly recommend a doula, it was so helpful to have someone who was just passionate about birth to support me for the whole journey. I had a super peaceful unmedicated birth, I felt so peaceful when I went into labor, apparently the body releases so much oxytocin which helps you feel really relaxed. Your body was created for this mama! You’ve got this. Practice your breathing and tell yourself everything will work out perfectly. You are amazing. ❤️❤️❤️
Positive experience = get the epidural as soon as possible
Rising Star
Positive experience = skip the epidural entirely
Different strokes for different folks 😊
I highly highly recommend getting a doula! And taking a comprehensive birth class like the Bradley Method. This class completely changed my perspective on birth and how my partner engaged in the process. Also, "Ina May's Guide to Childbirth" book has 100s of positive birth stories, which my husband and I read together leading up to the arrival of our first baby. These stories were so empowering, some of the women were even having orgasmic-births. Which I thought was so wild! Just remember, to breath, and relax, turn the lights off, and believe that your body was made to do this! <3
I was worried about birth beforehand, but when it happened I just went into “the zone”. It was definitely difficult, but my body put me in the right headspace
Same. I was really anxious about giving birth pretty much from the moment I got pregnant, but as soon as I went into labor my body was like “Showtime!” and all the fear was completely gone. Your body is amazing and so capable 💕
Just let your body do what it is made to do. Anxiety and fear can slow down the processes. As soon as that baby is out you are suddenly filled with joy, endorphins, euphoria
