In the final stages of a recruiting process for a role in NY and found out my partner will need to be working in California for the next year. I know the firm is super flexible about location/remote, but up until this point they think I’m in and staying in NY. At what point do I tell them I’ll be traveling on some cadence to NY, but not living full time, as I will need to be CA for the next year? Post offer?

What are your strategies for completing work efficiently? How do you figure out how long projects should take? A consistent piece of feedback on my yearly reviews has been that I over-bill & spend too much time on assignments. It’s something I actively work on, but I still have no concrete sense of how long I should spend on basic tasks (e.g., drafting a motion to dismiss). My firm is right to expect that I manage my time better as a mid-level associate. WFH has made my time management worse.

Joining a big firm next week as fully remote lateral and flying out to home office for orientation. The schedule has me in office until 4:15. I’ve already been told I won’t have any actual work. Why do Big 4 firms interview you for a specific position level and then try to make you come in below that level...

That would be a lateral move for me in terms of level which be okay if at least it was a good pay increase but Their quoted pay range for the lower level would make it almost a lateral move financially too..
