Negotiations 101, never tell them your range. Tell them that you’re interested in hearing what they value your skill set at and go from there. Every company has a target range set aside. You have the most to lose if you sell yourself short.
BAH 1, I was just about to say the same thing.
Now wait for an offer and then be honest and tell than that you want more. And you have another offer with better salary then you can tell them about it as well.
Or you can accept the position with the lower salary and then negotiate better raise once you’re in. That path is tougher, but if you prove you’re a superstar, you can definitely do it
If you gave the recruiter that range, you could say: “After we spoke, I did more research online and spoke with peers about the salary range. Some are getting as much as $138K for this position. I would consider something in the range of $124K to $138K.” The $138K figure should be higher than you think you could get, but somewhat supported, and the $124K should be the number you actually want and think you could get. That way you can reset their expectations with an “extreme anchor” while also seeming flexible with a range. They will likely go to the bottom of your range, so don’t put a number lower than one that is your target/one you would be happy with.
I don’t think it is too late to sync up with the recruiter on this. I wouldn’t do it in the interview with any practice people. Just make sure you do your research on the numbers and they are defensible and be polite about it. Like any negotiation it is best if you have the option to walk away if the numbers don’t work for you.
