We have standardized pay (both base and variable potential) at level with minor increases for tenure
Your negotiation will fail
Negotiate signing bonus instead
Obviously I'm not with BCG. However, successful negotiation is variable upon applicants; you shouldn't skip negotiation; let them tell you "no."
...You don't tell yourself no.
I’m a Partner at BCG. Salaries are ALL set in stone. No negotiation on salaries.
But you can negotiate level. We will guide you on level based on where we believe you’ll be most successful. Salary is tied to level
Negotiating level is a double edged sword though. Higher level = higher expectations and often a shorter runway to perform. Remember, you're being compared to dyed in the wool BCGers.
I won't post exact comp here. Base salary is lock stepped by tenure. Best case is that they would offer you PL2 comp, and you would forgo the tenure increase in a year. You could end up with 10 to 15% of your number.
Based on what I've observed on Fishbowl, our bonuses work very differently than big four. The floor for an on track project leader is around 20 percent bonus with 10 percent retirement. The bonus portion could easily be double that for high performers.
Trajectory is also very different. I would expect an increase of at least 30% for a first year principal vs first year project leader. That promotion happens in two years.
Thank you BCG2. Appreciate it
Could guess it BCG2 Thanks again
210 base is high for first year mgr
We usually consider PL to be equivalent to manager. It is the first managerial role. Principal would be SM. at big fours that have SM.
OP when are you scheduled to interview? And how did you go about getting the interview for a M role? Similar boat, internally referred and waiting to hear back
Thank you guys. BCG1 how much can I expect the standardized pay to be ?
EY1 contacted by a recruiter. Interviewing in early January
OP do you have an MBA?
*10-15% off your number
Yes. I do but from an elite college in India
Also, best places to see the salaries is glassdoor
FB seems more accurate than Glassdoor P1 but thank you for providing me with insights around the negotiation path. This was very helpful.
One small point. We don’t have a manager role. I assumed you were asking about first year Principal role
P1 : Is Principal the equivalent of Manager or Sr. Manager in Big4? I thought PL = Manager and Principal = Sr. Manager. Isn’t that true if we have to draw parallels ?
I don’t know enough about big 4 to answer this directly. .
But for BCG. PL is usually a 24 to 30 month promotion from Consultant post MBA or Advanced degree. Principal is the promotion following PL promotion, usually 21 to 27 months later
