Negotiate base salary. My superfial understanding is that usually the equities and bonuses are more controlled and less negotiable unless you have the leverage. But 🤷🏻♂️

Bonus is bonus.
For me, those are two separate things and should be treated as such.
Maybe the equity but I, like, don't really understand how equity works. I'd have to look into that more.

Yeah I always think of them as separate. Like bonus and equity is the cherry on top.
So total comp IMO should be more than what we'd get as base elsewhere. If total comp = the market's base, that's bs.

Always negotiate. It also helps to keep the conversations separate, if possible.
Negotiate your salary first, then your stock, then ask for a signing bonus. Not always possible, or not always advisable to approach this way but I found it has worked out well for me.

Sounds low bc I make more than that as an agency mid-level (in SF tho).
Agency promised bonuses when I got hired a year ago, but haven’t seen any of that. My understanding is that bonuses only really happens if I do good AND the agency does good, so i’m not expecting to see any bonuses now that we’re heading towards a recession.
The only way I would consider is if moving laterally salary-wise but moving up in title and maybe desperate too. Then I’d take the title and use it to jump to a higher pay elsewhere as soon as the opportunity comes up.
Never heard of agency bonuses being a consistency, you should ask what percentage and level of employee receives these AND how often this occurs year over year.

Not necessarily true. Go ahead and ask but Plenty of agencies (mostly indies) give consistent profit sharing across the entire agency. We have given between 3-15% of annual salary in bonus to all employees consistently for over ten years. (% depends on agency performance obviously)
And it depends on what the equity structure is to know if it is worth it. Ask more questions about that.
Negotiate. Salary is real money and bonuses/equity is theoretical money. Never accept the promise of theoretical money in exchange for any real money.
Lol definitely negotiate. It's ridiculous that employers are trying to give a lower salary and say, "oh, but you get health insurance". (Happened to me)
