Is it a bad idea to accept a job that requires you to work on weekends as needed?

I don’t like the idea of having no predictability of my schedule. This is not good for raising a baby and supporting a family. I am thinking that its a bad idea and only good for the employer. I am curious if anyone else has experience with this kind of work environment.

What do you guys think?

I completely understand how draining the search can be, it really does take a toll after a while. When I reached that point myself, what made the biggest difference was connecting with a job search specialist who gave me a structured plan and kept me motivated. With his guidance, I was able to land my new role at PACCAR. If you’d like some support to regain focus and energy, you can reach him at georgerobinsonhiringteam.gmail.com

I say don't work on weekends. It requires you to give up quality time that you NEED to spend on and by yourself or your family. There are needs that can't be felt on a surface level in mundane week to week activities or over time, but they will cumulate into negative spirals that have no apparent explanation one way or another.

long story short: spend your weekends away from work. maybe if you want to retire early it might be an exception, but otherwise, raise yourself and healthy habits with your family on weekends. Do not try to stack up every dollar you can. It can just as easily be taken away. Try to have some faith.

This is very good advice. Thanks for sharing

As an employee, anything over 40 hours should not be required. However, being in IT my entire adult life, sht happens and to have everything operational come monday sometimes requires weekend work. The worst part is the company still expects you in the office for your next 40. Usually.

How did you tell your manager you’re pregnant? Did it affect pay/promos? And then, subsequently, how did you start letting colleagues know you’re pregnant? Feels awkward to just randomly drop the news in a meeting! I work remotely so it’s hard to tell by video :) I’m 21 weeks and feel like I’ve waited as long as I can to at least notify my manager. I was waiting to negotiate my salary for next year but per company trend that doesn’t get set until January (manager reviews are written in Dec).

I just got a really great offer, only downside is the eligibility for maternity leave is after 12 months of employment. We got a faint positive today but have had so many chemical pregnancies over the past year that I am not confident it will stick this time BUT I am on aspirin and progesterone for this try … so it could.. I want to see if I could negotiate being eligible earlier but I also don’t want them to think I’m pregnant when I’m not actually… How would you approach the conversation?

Trying to set family expectations and would love thoughts on 2 things. 1. How long after baby will I be ready for visitors beyond our parents? I’m thinking a few weeks. 2. Our 3 grandmothers are 1-3 hour flights away (3 diff places) and cannot travel. When will we be ready to take baby to see them? I’m thinking 4-6 months but that would also be flu/RSV season. Can’t predict the future but family is already talking about trips and I want to set expectations and do what is best for baby. TIA!!

Have an interesting scenario. Holiday party season is approaching. At one of our parties (during working hours) there is an optional “talent show.” Employees can win door prizes. We have an entry that is a religious song - like one you would sing in church. I assume we need to let this employee perform this - or we are setting ourselves up for trouble. Likewise, if we permit this song, I assume we cannot compel attendance to the talent show. The talent show is part of a lunch thing.
