Why not start your hustle while working full time? Starting your own business is complicated in so many ways- executing the idea itself, turning a profit, and managing a small business. It’s a big risk and although you will never know what it’s like until you do it full time, it helps to test things out and build momentum if possible while you have another income source.
Is extended PTO an option or even a LOA? I say this from experience- working at a larger firm has a ton of benefits that entrepreneurship life doesn’t. Stable pay, health insurance, 401k...it’s a lot to give up to pursue your dream. Giving yourself runway to test things out before the pressure is really on can be really valuable (for your bank account and your sanity).
Big risks can have big rewards, as well as big failures. If you fail, are you in a financial situation to continue forward?
The way I think is NOT TO HAVE A PLAN B. The attitude should be I am gonna make my business work come what may. If u think I will quit my job and wing at my business, u r half given up right there!
I agree with EY1. Having a Plan B is planning on not succeeding.
Make sure you have a solid business plan, secure and have more than adequate working capital, and work hard. Consider working with a SCORE mentor: https://www.score.org
Not unless you have financial support and know exactly how you’re going to execute
That's a big question go ask. Agree with D1. What's your back up plan or worst case scenario? Do you have a mortgage to pay or can you live with family rent/bill free?
I do for now. Financially no obligations.. and am staying with rent free but I ask myself until when I can continue to take this risk? And will that make me too late to then get a job if this fails.
Using a few weeks of annual leave or a leave of absence could be a good way of trialling without the same risk
It’s easy to say don’t have a plan b if you’ve never needed to worry about that. As someone who has done that, you can survive but that’s not ideal. You do you. If you’ll be anxious and making business decisions out of fear, not good. If you need insurance, that’s a big expense and somewhat limiting if you’re not part of a large group (cobra is 18 mos.) Taxes are a big deal, not like taxes taken out of your paycheck. Sock away some $$$. At least get everything set - website, biz plan, etc. so you’ve saved yourself 6 mos. right there.
Ps I say that as someone fully supportive of doing your own thing, just know the challenges.
Do not quit your jobs until you have to. I started and exited without quitting. It also depends on the type of venture and type of jobs you have. If you make good money it is harder to quit your job.
