Is it legal to tell your staff not to talk about our pay? My manager has the need to always remind us not to speak about our pay to each other lol

Are you in the US? Look up the protections under the National Labor Relations Act. Companies cannot stop (most) employees from talking about their own pay. Some states have laws that extend that protection to everyone (Colorado's recent equal pay act, for example). The law does not allow for a third party (e.g. payroll or HR) to share your wages with someone else or vice versa.

This comment is wonderful. Thank you for letting me know what this is called so I can bring it to my co-workers' attention whom were told they could not talk about what they're paid.

It is not illegal, it’s just taboo (in the US). It only benefits the company not to discuss pay.

I am a big believer in pay transparency and am happy to share my compensation in most situations. I think it’s actually really important to do so, especially in my industry where someone with the same title, in the same location, could be making wildly different salaries.

At a last job, I had a creative partner. We had the same title and did the same exact level/quantity of work. I’d argue, she was even better than me. We found out that she was making over 40K less than me. At the same company, in the same office. If we hadn’t talked about it, she wouldn’t have been able to fight to solve the problem. The company would have done nothing if she hadn’t raised the alarm.

Thank you so so much!!! I feel as companies want staff members to avoid discussing these things because they want to control who they pay what too lol but it’s not fair to give someone 5+ years and then a HS graduate with no experience comes in with what you’re currently making and i had to work for that $2 raise. I get different times and now in ILLINOIS the minimum wage is going up but i feel so should everyone else’s pay

Discussing pay while not professional is not illegal and employees are protected should they choose to share this information. Any retaliation would be illegal. Look up Pay Transparency In the DOL resources: Under Executive Order 11246, you have the right to inquire about, discuss, or disclose your own pay or that of other employees or applicants. You cannot be disciplined, harassed, demoted, terminated, denied employment, or otherwise discriminated against because you exercised this right.

It is generally understood that you don’t talk about your pay. Most likely your boss feels it is happening and wants to remind everyone. In your case if there are constant reminders it certainly feels like there is some disparity that s/he doesn’t want anyone to know about.

🚩🚩🚩

Not illegal, frowned upon.

Instead they told me I needed more training and hired me as a Junior account executive at a $50k salary + commission. Today is my 6th month mark and I have done very well. Hi all 🙂👋🏻 Apologies for such a late post. I have an offer of 18 CTC(1L joining bonus) from Larsen & Toubro Infotech & 12.5 fixed from IBM .
My joining in both are in around May last week. Tomorrow my IBM pre onboarding HR will connect with me. Should I ask for a counter offer tomorrow itself?
Or should I ask 2 weeks before joining?
Many told me that companies revise CTC when the joining date is near, else they show less interest. So should I go for it now itself?
Appreciate ur inputs🙂

Does anyone know if this is normal? I joined a vault 100 firm in September last year. The firm put me on tier 7. In January I had the associate review and everything was normal. After a couple of weeks, I got the call from the hiring partner telling my bonus and new salary (because of the firm-wide salary increase). I realized I still get paid as a 7 year associate. The partner said because I joined the firm later in the year, it’s normal not to advance in the next year. Is it? Thanks!

Hi
I have received an offer from a company and I'm in the second stage of interviews with another company. I am very interested to see if I could make it through for the second company. So can I accept the offer from first company and then if second one also sends an offer then let the first company know I would like to reject? Also i am on H1B visa. Should I be concerned with that?

I have received offer letter from Optum Global Solutions India recently and I am seriously considering joining it(I also have offers from Deloitte USI and Verizon).

So I want to understand how the Flexi and Special Allowance are paid monthly. Can someone please help?

I need advice. I moved into product management under a year ago to an early stage startup. The first few months went well, but the last 5 have been chaotic. It feels like we’re becoming more sales led, there are too many pivots (I expected some) our roadmap is becoming influenced by sales/ceo. Essentially, we’re trying to do much. It’s happening so much I’m starting to lose confidence in the company/strategy. It’s also causing me anxiety…

Clawback clause in current contract: been in role for over 2 yrs, it was an internal move that required relocation. Relocation was approved shortly after (over 2 yrs ago) but covid meant the actual move and start of my contract with new subsidiary was delayed, I was paid by the previous subsidiary meanwhile. I got small relocation package. Would internal move be subject to a buy-out/clawback clause if I leave now and if yes, is it time in role or time under new contract? Any experience? Thanks!

I had interviewed externally for a role on par w the internal roles, at a smaller and less established company. They confirmed +20% was in their range

How do I push back on my company if they offer less than that, if I do want one of those roles? Without a pay scale, what is the best way to approach?
