Is it possible to coast in consulting, i.e. do the bare minimum not to get fired? Has anyone had experience with this/any tips to offer?

M1 has it right. A lot of the work is not challenging, just frustrating.

I’ve been coasting and doing the minimum for over 2 years. Likely will be promoted soon

But why?

Some people make on the “who you know” basis others in the “what you know” basis. You can coast on the “who you know” path pretty easily - but you have to be savvy in how well you kiss ass

I've had some projects where I coasted primarily because the work wasn't challenging

Get a project in a city that’s family friendly like Minneapolis

Sure.. become PPD

Second DD1... Why? If you want to do that, may as well work in industry and get paid more to coast.

Been coasting since I was an analyst...

Happens all the time

Yup, been coasting for a while and doing decent work rather than killing myself. Find what matters in terms of checking the box and just stick to that while looking busy at times and keeping productivity at a decent pace. Its a marathon and you just need to make it 6 months to a year. I decided to do this after a tough first year and coasted through the second year.

I spent a year in tax investigations where I believe I was thriving ( I was going to be an assistant manager in July 2023), I had a lot of assistant manager jobs, I even drafted a Code 9 report to HMRC which my manager said was 80% of an actual report, he then added the 20% and submitted it.
After I realised I couldn't maintain all the unpaid overtime I was working I decided to take a turn and go to compliance, so now I work in CT compliance. I feel very surpressed.

I can’t help but feel stuck in my career. I’m a licensed attorney in another country, but been working as a law clerk in a firm for about a year now. I was hoping to take the NY bar in February but the foreign law graduate restrictions won’t allow. Now, I have to wait till July! I can’t help but feel this way, and as much as I love my company, I’m beginning to dislike the role. Maybe it’s an ‘ego’ thing? Anyone ever been in this position? How did you get over it?

I ask because I’ve let my credit spending get a bit lax since moving and adopting a puppy recently, so I haven’t been paying them off in full every month like I used to (though still well above the minimum payment, and keeping utilization at 30% or under). It got me thinking about how many people adhere to this advice.
