Probably belongs on other thread about making partner but relevant here as well. I do think that recently there has become a bit of a mindset that ‘if you can wait it out long enough you can make partner’ - as folks have said elsewhere not saying some of best folk don’t leave to go to industry and have great careers but you have to have a lot of good qualities to make partner. And politics luck etc as well. In my office - where we prob promote one person every 2-3 years - there were 2 SM’s (who were basically ranked let’s say 8th/9th our of 12/13 SM’s) and they both had the conversation with their counselor ‘should I stay and make partner’. Now - obviously someone should have been more direct with them earlier in career but for middle of the road SM’s to think had a shot shows me that this mindset of ‘stick around and it will happen’ creates hunch of folks who think partner is an option - when in reality it’s probably an option for 2-3 people in new manager class of 12-14
This makes a lot of sense and I can see where you’re coming from. But what would you say to my original question of if it is worth it? Let’s say you are someone who has the qualities?
Partner is not a given. It’s actually like becoming a made man in the mafia, just a lot less cool. There are many many better jobs to shoot for than partner
