Better to overdress than underdress
This is the correct answer here. Unless someone interviewing you tells you otherwise, wear a suit and tie.
Depends on where you are interviewing but I would err on the side of being overdressed
As a hiring manager, I’ve never once thought someone came overdressed to an interview. I have on occasion thought people came underdressed. I think it mostly depends on the role/type of org you’re interviewing with. At bare minimum wear a collared shirt with a sport coat.
Remember the way you present is used as an indicator of how seriously you’re taking the situation.
Since everyone here is assuming you are male, I'll share the female point of view. I'd go with a blouse and jacket, either pants or skirt is fine. Conservative length on skirt.
Thank you - I (the original poster) am female. It’s good to hear all the responses though. Will be interviewing soon and wondered if I should buy a suit.
Still good practice to wear suits (Can skip the tie though)
And is it in person or video?
Pro
Most people that I see interviewing still wear suits. At the very least, a pair of nice dress pants, a button-down suit shirt and a sport jacket is the minimum. You can skip the tie if you go the sport jacket route. Good luck.
I always do business professional. You can always take off the blazer or suit coat once you get there and see the atmosphere or after the first round.
In person - Dress. To. Impress. Period.
Dress to impress
I'd go with dress to not impress. The least memorable the outfit the better.
I wonder this all the time. We don’t see leadership wearing ties anymore, and they say dress for the role you want not the one you have. Definitely a worthy question.
Business professional. Doesn't mean you need to buy a full suit though. Find a blazer that matches well with slacks you already own. Or blazer over a conservative length dress. Dress to impress, same as you would for a networking event or a client meeting
I wear my nicest bathing suit for interviews. Works everytime (I am unemployed)
Wear a suit. I do a lot of interviews, and while I don't automatically write someone off if they're not in a suit, it absolutely sets a good tone right off the bat if they do. Always take the extra brownie points.
Not required. Highly recommended
I don’t wear a suit
But I do wear a tie out of respect
I’ve also interviewed with just a crewneck under a blazer
I let the interviewers know that the interview was scheduled during my lunch break and I don’t wear a suit and white shirt and tie to work.
I said “I just usually dress casual unless we’re meeting with a client”
To which the interview said “hey man I’m wearing a hoodie I totally get it, no worries”
I got the job offer but didn’t accept for some areas of the work life balance I didn’t agree with
Call me old school, but I still believe that your first impression is your last impression.
I have one suit--it works for job interviews, funerals, and court dates. You never know when you'll need to wear one.
