What is a data lake in basic terms?
Thought this was interesting. Across 160 teams of researchers, just about all failed to make good life outcome predictions on things like GPA, evictions, layoffs, and others. Data followed 4.5k families across 15 years, with 13k features (varied over time). Haven't looked at it directly yet, but will be turning the docs and data inside out... In the meantime, authors claim this as showing the limits of ML. Oh, and it's published in PNAS, so you know there's some big publication energy there.

Does your data science skill set match SC level ? If yes, absolutely do not switch to MBB for the brand name alone!
I think D offers a lot of data science roles so why not look for projects internally? If you really do want to move for data science roles and don’t care about consulting as much then look widely in industry - data scientists are handsomely paid - taking a pay cut for it absolutely doesn’t any make sense
What’s your idea of “paid handsomely”.
I personally see pay ranges all over the place, totally not lockstep with YOE.
I think the brand name carries but you’re going to be working more, getting paid less, and be considered less valuable than consultants by many. I’d be interested to see if people In these roles feel like their projects are staffed well
Agree. Does not make sense
MBB has the prestige for sure. But I never leave a job for a pay cut unless it was a bad organization I was stuck in.
Also, from a level perspective you would be starting over in a lot of ways. Many will say this is not important, but I disagree. It will 100% be more work for less pay.
Never take a pay cut, esp in this market
If your goal is to be an IC Data Scientist at FAANG or similar, then MBB adds 0 value. If you are looking to exit as PM/TPM then MBB is worth considering.
BCG 1 - Thanks a lot for your sharing! This is very helpful and encouraging! May I ask which office are you based in if you don’t mind?
It's worth considering what the pay looks like in 3 years at MBB vs at your current role ?
It’s a bit hard to say as it’s hard to predict how quickly I will be promoted from SC onwards...
No.
How much bonus does D pays u? MBB probably pays a better bonus..pay cut in total comp in this market does not make too much sense if it’s in the same industry imo
Probably not. MBB is not known for being tech savvy. For career reputation you would go with FAANG (or whatever the acronym should be these days)
You're a technical worker that has to provide top of the line solutions that work.
You say you just got a promotion and raise after this offer. Is the offer between those two levels or below the old one?
If it was between, I would still consider it seriously. They’re starting you at a lower level but apparently the pay at each level is better, and your experience should help you move up quickly. The exit opps from MBB would also likely be better in a couple years. Finally if you haven’t already, you can just let them know you just got a raise and would like them to match it. They may say no, but no harm in asking.
In general I think still yes, but it probably depends what kinds of exits interest you. If you want to become an analytics leader / executive and don’t mind eventually having your hands-on coding skills become rusty, MBB will probably help you get to more senior roles faster. If you want to DS at a tech firm, none of these roles are great but I suppose the closer you can get to working with the specific tech that firm works with, the better.
