McKinsey & Company Has any industry experienced candidates pivot to MBB Engagement Manager before? My roommate works at FAANG as Senior Analyst (Ops, 6+ YOE) and was approached by McKinsey & Company recruiter for an EM role. He hasn’t done consulting before. Would this be too much of a risk? His goal is to pivot to PE S&O eventually.

Haha I’m not! Trying to decipher a resume lol
In the US:
Bain: Associate Consultant -> Consultant -> Case team leader - principal ->...
BCG: Associate -> Consultant -> Project Leader -> Principal ->...
McK: BA -> Senior BA (sometimes can be skipped for very high performers) -> EM ->...
So yeah I’d say it’s pretty equivalent to PL and EM.
@m1 interesting on LinkedIn I haven't seen any homegrown Assc in the past year. Seems like all the associates were MBA hires but it could've just been a function of LinkedIn Algo
Not sure about McK / BCG, but at Bain Consultant to Case Team Leader is not an official up or out point, more of a tenure promotion. Case Team Leader is designed to be a year long transition from consultant to Manager. Going from Case Team Leader to Manager is the up or out point. Then you are at Manager for about 2.5 years before Principal.
Fair point, the above was NA centric. Also important to note that not everyone makes CTL, you can be counseled out sooner and it does indicate a change in responsibilities / ownership on a project. It’s just not an explicit up or point in NA in the same way Manager is.
You missed a step for Bain. It goes Consultant > CTL > Manager > Principal. CTL is a one year role where you are essentially a EM but for slightly smaller team. In the AP hierarchy, this would translate to the SVP level as we’ve brought in a few in the last few years.
