My experience is the first half of your career is spent sweating your performance and the second half is sweating your age.
Keep your book updated. Always apply for new jobs on LinkedIn, just because. And always look like you’re working hard.
Job security doesn’t exist in this business in the conventional sense. Your skills are your only security. Either be very good at doing your job, or very good at schmoozing. (Look at all the incompetent idiots in the C suites.) And best of all is being the offspring of someone famous in the business, but you wouldn’t be asking the question were that your situation.
there is. part of surviving in this biz is joining agencies that have positive momentum and solid leadership that can keep accounts happy. if you sense a sinking ship or a big account loss, get ahead of the game and start looking for a new gig
Losing business left and right. Layoffs left and right. Leadership hasn’t changed at all despite all the failure within the agency. It’s a total mess.
I for sure have ptsd from the last recession. I guess popular longterm pre-retirement solutions seem to be: go health or go client-side. (the trick is, don’t go too soon?) Otherwise the best tip I have is save, save, save.
Welcome to advertising. It’s unstable. Always will be (although I do know of a few people who’ve been at places for decades—highly unusual). It’s just the nature of the beast. Ironically, I found freelancing more stable (& less stress-inducing) than staff. If it’s making you too crazy, maybe you should look into client side.
Keep your book updated and save your money. I’ve always managed my finances to plan for layoffs or just flipping the fuck out and quitting.
For example, I could afford a $3k/month apartment, but live in an $1800/month place. Money in the bank makes me feel more comfortable than luxury living.
