No offense but if someone hires an independent admin with little to no experience to do anything besides report building and user management I’ll be in there fixing it this time next year
Gain that experience either by working for a company as a consultant or in a junior admin type role.
Look for volunteer work/ projects. There are organizations that need a little helping hand that will expose you to real world experience in different environments. And of course definitely sign up for a dev org and play around with different concepts. Earning the cert is one thing. Applying them to real world scenarios is another.
I’ve got mixed feelings on this one. I’ve seen a lot of people trying to get experience by volunteering leave the nonprofits in pretty rough shape. If you’re going to volunteer make sure you’re doing it to help them in addition to get skills for yourself.
I've seen companies hire these kinds of consultants, mostly because there's a sucker born every minute. That being said... they'll end up hiring a more experienced resource to fix the mess later.
Thanks for the perspective! Lol
Maybe startups would consider having you, but I’d say just move on
Salesforce has programs to pair you with non-profits as a volunteer.
Hey OP I think I might be able to provide some insight here. So I started with zero experience on platform, studied for a year straight ( No BS), got certified and then started job hunting. Two things I picked up on very quick: 1) Being an Admin is not a side gig. You’re either doing or not. You gotta whole-ass it. Not half-ass it. And 2) Those volunteer opportunities are not that great. That’s because those orgs are often a complete dumpster fire. And you’re not going to learn much in an environment in which dumpster fires exist.
Instead, do the work on trailhead, build a portfolio org and get an awesome administrator position. Whole-Ass it!
I really wish I could show you all this org I’m working in now. I can’t, for obvious reasons, but I really want you all to see this thing. No fires, anywhere. Just things to polish and incrementally improve upon. It’s goddamn astonishing how little there is that’s wrong. You remember those nerf footballs with the whistles in them? This org is like when you threw that ball and it was a perfect spiral and that thang was WHISTLING.
