Enjoy companion pass! Best domestic perk in the industry
Once you get status I honestly prefer it. If you book 'anytime' fare or business select, you rack up points faster than you can believe. I really enjoy southwest, obviously it's not as good as first class but other than that it's awesome.
Southwest is the BEST airline to have a lot of points as far as value and ability to change flights. Companion pass is so dope as well
They have a double points promotion currently, you pretty much get a free flight every week if you’re booking anytime or business selest. Poor you!
@D1: The 'best perk in for domestic travel' claims about companion pass are bullshit. It has the highest cash value only if you use it extremely aggressively, which doesn't usually work out for business travellers. Few of us want to travel 3-5 days a week only to turn around and do it again for the weekend, and fewer of us have friends/significant others/spouses with consistent enough availability to really use the companion pass. Among heavier travellers I know that are SWA elites, they use companion pass maybe 2-4 times per year, tops. If you're a road warrior on any US airline, it's easy to surpass the usable value of SWA companion pass with just a couple international flights (except maybe for those that fly American, because of shitty reward seat availability lol). I mean, hell, I redeemed United points from last year's business travel on Star Alliance partners for travel totalling over $75k if booked in cash, and still have quite a few points left over. You can't achieve that kind of value on SWA unless you fly and bring a companion multiple times per week.
That said, it probably is the perk that can claim highest reward availability, there isn't any disputing that.
If for work and personal you mainly fly short domestic flights, southwest is the clear winner.if you’re going cross country or international business class for work frequently or your primary vacations are international... then less so. Almost all of my work and personal travel is a <2.5 hour flight though, so southwest is a pretty clear winner.
Mck1: Really? I think SWA is most efficient for business folks if you follow the program: Get Business Select, be in line at the time 1-15 is boarding, choose your seat and settle in, and crank out more emails or slides while the rest of the cattle boards.
I'm a United guy and hate how Group 1 can be huge and folks jockey for overhead space by lining up 15-25 minutes before boarding time. That is a collosal waste of my time.
I target getting to the boarding gate between 20-25 minutes before departure (I have only missed flight in client cities when something went very, very wrong with traffic), depending on the airport, because I have a seat assignment and high enough status that the attendant will almost always find a spot for my carry on. I don't wait with huge group 1 boarding group or just hang out on the plane. Usually I am walking up just as the crowd is shuffling out of the jetway and into their seats so I stroll into mine.
When I fly Southwest the penalty for missing the start of boarding is so high that the target is be at the gate 45-50 minutes before boarding. That is about 30 extra minutes each flight just so I don't have to sit in the middle seat at the back of the plane.
Not worth it when travelling for business every week. One of those 30 minute blocks is Monday morning so I get that as extra sleep (there is plenty of time to work on the plane). The other allows me to spend my time with the team or client.
It’s looking like I’ll have to be booking webfare. 1) what is that? 2) how does that impact perks / points? The fare is just too good to reasonably pass up on ($300 each way each week vs. next best rate)
M1 idk I've used it 5-6 times and it's totally worth it. But you make a great point, sometimes I don't want to fly Thursday night only to get on a plane Friday.
Don’t forget guys when you earn companion pass, it works for the rest of that year plus the full following year though. So assuming OP will be off this job and may have bench time the point about flying Friday after Thursday is not always true. Plus if you get before this thanksgiving then you have free flight to family for 2 thanksgivings and Xmas if you do that kind of travel. Not to mention if you have companion pass you earn at a higher multiplier and all the flights you take with it build your points after your companion pass expires
What's overlooked is the insane rate at which you accrue points, A List Preferred is 100% bonus, I earn ~3K per week flying a super short 1 hr flight. One ways can be had for ~5-12K.
Not wrong, I love my exec plat and do almost anything to stay with AA
Mkc1 I had to fly AA last week versus SWA and was saying the same thing. Very slow boarding process. Waited too long. Inefficient. All around do not want to fly AA for that alone
Just curious, mck1, how do you waste extra 1hour?
Mck1 southwest boards exactly 30 min before flight. Never sooner. Rarely much later. If you paid for a business select ticket you don’t have issues. If you happen to snooze and arrive while boarding you can jump line with business select. Not sure I see the issue. Your call of course. But doesn’t seem like good rationale
Is this in light of the SW incident out of LGA this morning?
D3, many/most airports have some uncertainty around security and traffic. Sure, you are right, if it was say Phoenix, where I know there won't be traffic and the curb to boarding door is less than 5 minutes reliably, then I can shave it close. But if it is a busier airport or your Uber pick up is screwy, or there is traffic that Google maps didnt anticipate, you are screwed when you show up at 25 minutes to departure, not 35.
That isn't a problem with a regular airline. I really target about 30 minutes prior to departure, but something usually slows me down (like the Uber having an in accurate estimate) so instead of 30 minutes prior, I show up 20 minutes prior. But there is zero cost on a legacy airport, or maybe if I am unlucky, I have to gate check my bag. Same scenario on Southwest and I am sitting in the bathroom for the whole flight. No matter how you slice it the penalty for missing the T-30 is way higher on Southwest, so I would build more buffer into my schedule. Whether you want to say it is 15 minutes each way instead of 30 is up to you but it is more time waiting in airports.
Southwest is a great airline. I flew and fly them with my family. They just arent as good for frequent business travel. I think that is why they have to offer a much more generous companion pass to business travelers.
Mkc1. Fair and it’s our prerogative to fly certain airlines! We can agree To disagree. Sounds like you struggle to get there 30 mins prior to departure. It is what it is. I rarely have that issue. The no change fees is also huge for me as a business traveler. So quicker boarding, more efficient boarding, no change fees, good routes for my domestic travel, and based on my experience MUCH better on time departure/ arrivals. Again, this is based on my experience as a flyer over past 20 years
You may change your mind after what just happened on southwest. I really hate that our firm makes us use them because they are cheaper
