Its so weird to be burnt-out when you keep seeing news of tech layoffs. I keep telling myself that I am lucky to have a job with a decent compensation.

I want to work for something inspiring, something that makes the world a better place instead of yet another failed attempt at an e-commerce project doomed to fail because the business fundamentals are just not there and/or our product is not a good fit for the business strategy of the customer.

"creating a vacancy" is a cute sentiment but in my experience management just doesn't hire replacements

World has gone to dogs. No country/job/company for decent men. Feeling of inside animal farm is real. Spend time with your kids/partner/parents/friends/family, everything else is just tightening up your own chains.

Absolutely man. I'm a tech person with experience and degree but I've truly learned that what counts is finding something unique where you feel valued and have close friends at work . We all die why focus on monet when there Is so much more to life . I've said it before and now I stand even more behind it I'm not moving to LA or NY for any tech job ever . I've made sacrifices and moved for work but life is just too short to not enjoy the few little things in life that make you happy including nice people

I feel that way at times, it just hits me how utterly pointless a lot of what we do really is. We make apps so lazy people can maximize their laziness. Great. On the other hand, we're not exactly laboring in a coal mine or on a farm or a factory floor. When I put it in those terms, and think about people who actually work hard, my complaints are pretty ridiculous.

likeupliftinghelpfulsmartfunny

While those jobs are more physically grueling, the labor is also much more aligned with their value. I feel like that’s such a new concept for humans that isn’t talked about much. Sure our work is meaningless, but it’s also disconnected gibberish. Farming or working in a coal mine isn’t changing the world, but you’re physically in the work, vs emailing about optimizing some random marketing campaign for dish soap. We appreciate physical comfort of our jobs while forgetting that the mental discomfort is significant as well.

Here’s what I have learned after a lot of years in the IT world. IT people are just a tool (not unlike the devices they manage and maintain). They are simply put “a necessary evil”. There’s a reason that people leave the industry or at best roam from role to role and company to company.

Insanity is doing the same things and expecting a different outcome.

So view it as a job. And one that pays well and decent benefits! Just a view after 18 months of retirement and finding deep satisfaction in the work done and the people that worked so closely with me. Did we change the world? Maybe, maybe not. Did we excel in our tasks. Without a doubt. Sometimes when your work career ends and you realize your achievements; things become clearer.

God bless everyone in their lives and careers.

likeupliftinghelpful

Yes, that’s for sure! I saw it coming for at least 2-3 years. I held out as long as I could. Then enough was enough.

There’s life after Enterprise Tech!
Best of luck my friends!

Brother I was a machinist for 30 years and a lot of people asked me why I got out of it. My answer was always " burnt out " but the truth is that most people in tech get out because they are constantly being taken advantage of. I've invented several processes and made custom tools. Even machined parts for the Hubble telescope. And the only thing I was given was a copy of the Ingersoll magazine that ran the article about the process that I invented because I used their turbo. Every company blocked every patent that I tried to submit on a process and tools that I invented. Corporate greed pushes people out of tech!

likesmart

That's awful I'm sorry it isn't right and corporate grees sure does rule a lot

This is a good attitude to have. You're very lucky. And grateful which is unlike most of the population.
As a Solution Architect you do have the capability to push your own agenda and business case if you see an opportunity for the business to improve or realign its technology to the business strategy.
You could look at sharing some of your time to a cause that aligns with your values. Otherwise plenty of not for profit companies need Solution Architects. Most pay reasonably well.

like

Yes, I have been thinking about that. I have searched a few times as well. Maybe I should try that again and see if third time is the charm

You're right in saying you're lucky. Speaking as someone who was laid off in November last year I would suggest keeping your current job and working behind the scenes on finding somewhere else that better aligns with your goals.

like

Burn-out is a real thing, not a limitation on your part. After 28 years, I burned out in 2020 when Covid cranked up the hours on top of the 60 - 80 hours I was already working. By the time 2021 rolled around, I had left job for another kept up the stress eventually forcing me to resign October 2021. I returned to work in May 2023 when we decided that we needed my income, but this time I went with contracting. If it were not for that, I know I would have been back to 60 to 80 hour weeks because a salary = "you work as much as needed because we pay you for 40 hours". That's the crux of being in IT in 2025, you work far more than 40 hours either because you are high up in the tree or it's the nature of the business.

like

I say everyone here should be working on a side project that could become their main source of income, at some future point. At no other point in history has it been easier to connect with like minded people or explore that side project.

I was feeling a similar way for a couple years and tried to make it work for me and my company, but ultimately I was laid off last year. Since I had been with my company for years I was not prepared to interview. And trying to build a resume after the fact was difficult.

Start preparing now for your next job now, even if you decide to stay with your current employer for years to come. Build a portfolio, build your network, keep your resume updated, keep your technical skills sharp (DSA).

I'll be really blunt... We all want to make the world a better place and many of us are burned out, but this is one of those years - and probably multiple years - that we all just need to get through and do our best to survive. I lived through every boom and bust cycle since the dotcom bubble (right around when my career began) and we are, without a doubt, on the skids again... Once we get through this era of absurdly pointless uncertainty (That is, if we do and still have a functioning economy) go out and find what makes your heart sing... But today, and for the foreseeable future, focus on surviving, saving, and making do with what you have. We're in rough waters again, you're the person with the most interest in keeping yourself afloat. Get yours and keep it. Do "good" later when things settle down.

Why do you always come today? I told you to come tomorrow. But I came tomorrow. No, you have come today because today is today, not tomorrow. Stop on coming today, come tomorrow. See how it works? :)

Tomorrow just doesn't exist and it never comes till you do it now / today.. I know that deep down in our hearts dreams never die.. actions do.. Haste makes waste too though.. plan.. but not for too long.. then follow your dreams as you live only once and your life is too short to spend it for boring jobs and for doing things that you don't like..

Working at a company and they can’t seem to hold on to their female, black and people of color employees. I blinked and 3 of the people who were in my onboarding class were either fired or they left. For context I’ve been in company less than a year and there are people who have been in the company 25yrs. I’m thinking of cutting loose before it gets to my turn.

Should I consider this as a fake recruitement.

Any know the salary for a senior solution analyst at BCG in the Chicago area? Glassdoor doesn’t have that job title listed, surprisingly.

I recently interviewed for a small strat consulting company (energy industry). I have 3 YoE and would be moving from engineering. the HR person asked me what my salary expectations were I was caught offguard and said I would expect it to be at least what I make now (around 100k). Im now worried theyll lowball me because I really shouldve asked for 120+bonus (I think this is market rate?) But they have salary bands they follow right? So if they pay consultants 140 usually would they offer me 100k?
