I’ve basically been working 65–70 hour weeks for the past month, and it’s making me seriously question doing another busy season. The experience is good, but I don’t know if it’s worth feeling like this every year. Do you stick it out for a few years or get out before it becomes your normal?

yeah this is my fourth and last i think. i love the work but the hours are just hard to justify for the pay

What firm are you at and sub service line are you in? You should try to do at least 5 years

What did you expect busy season to be? This is well known going into public accounting.

when you get out, you will just miss it and go back for the next one. that’s what happened for me anyway

Wish I’d have gotten out before it became my normal. This is my 14th tax season. The last 5 or so in particular have gotten progressively more miserable. I tried working for different firms and working for myself but it just doesn’t bring me any joy or *healthy* excitement anymore.

I should have committed to leaving after 5-7 years. It gets trickier to leave after that depending on your experience. I am finally on my way out though, hopefully for good.

In my opinion, public practice is all or nothing. Those who don’t love it won’t last. At the same time, it’s very steady employment and a good way to keep up with changes in the profession, and those are some of the things that kept me in it this long.

So I worked from home yesterday and my husband had a sneak peak on my meetings with clients (which I’m very new to being a senior). He mention that I should read some sales pitch books of some sorts so I can get a process down and not be drain from having genuine conversations with every client. I think it’s a great idea. Anyone have thoughts or recommendation?

Do you all see a compelling future in your tax career? I’ll go first, I don’t see a compelling future working for a large PA firm in the long run because you have to work more as you move up. However, I do see a compelling future by using my knowledge and skills to open my own firm/business and work less hours as long as I make enough money which is $75k, or if I do work long hours, it’s because I want to.

It’s hard to trust the partners/leadership when they want us to return to office as being better when we increase offshoring? Also, the pressure on billable hours when all that really matters is how much our fixed labor costs vs. how much we can bill (which is usually fixed fee or at least a range) and the fixed labor costs of offshoring is significantly cheaper so the hours don’t matter. Am I mistaken by this viewpoint?

Question: I have a client who started a restaurant. He leased the land and bought shipping containers where he spent money contracting out to turn them into bars. I’m having a tough time determining how to depreciate this! First thought was leasehold but he’s not making improvements to a structure...he owns the structure! But nonresidential real estate at 27.5 years doesn’t make sense either as it’s not a brick and mortar building. Curious on others thoughts! TIA

Working for a senior who is beyond horrible. She talks to you like you’re stupid and makes it sound like you’re absolutely terrible at what you’re doing. She’s made 5 other associates cry during her 5 year career. Got someone fired and made another person quit. It’s known around the office that she can no longer have a female associate, because she talks down to females more than she does males. I came along and thought I could deal with it but she literally makes me want to not log on tomorrow.

I am treated with respect and my schedule is more normal. I am even working more billable hours than before, but it feels like a seamless experience. I don’t work then past 5pm or anything out of the ordinary for this time of the year. I am so grateful!
