Four interviews should’ve been plenty for a mid-level role unless it’s super niche or cross-functional. If they’re relooping people you’ve already met, it could mean indecision or internal politics. Doesn’t mean they’re not serious, but it does mean they might not respect your time. I’d ask them directly, “What’s the goal of this next step, and where are we in the process?”
It feels like you're reaching the point where you should be sending them an invoice for your time. Seriously, it's probably just the way they operate. It's a broken system populated by individuals who don't want to make a decision, so they spread the decision out to a lot of people. I mean, they're just hiring someone to do a job, enough with the feckless time wasting.
If they are wasting your time, they are wasting their own time. My guess is that it's between you and one or two other candidates who are all in the running and they are just trying to differentiate their top choices. I know it seems like a huge runaround, but I also think it's kind of a good sign that they keep bringing you in.
That many interviews for a mid-level job sounds like they’re either unsure of what they want or they’re being overly cautious. Either way, it’s fair to ask them where things stand.
