Have a chat with a couple of recruiters… they should give you some helpful advice. It’s quite a tough market so try not to leave without something to go to unless you’re current gig is effecting your health… good luck
Firstly, I’m sorry that you find yourself in this situation. I’ve been there too, and faced some similar choices. For me at least, the unhappy work situation was an occasion for me to get crystal clear with myself about what type of situation was the best fit for me - both personally and professionally. If the new company ticks most of your boxes and has a reputation for accelerated development and promotion of its talent, it might not be that long to catch back up while you enjoy a much better sense of fit and fulfillment. Is there room to negotiate title and/or comp with the job offer? If the new company is more likely to be a bridging situation for you, focus on minimizing the title downgrade because that will likely have longer-term consequences when you are ready to move on again. If the new role allows you to cut down on expenses (eg less expensive commuting costs, free gym memberships, subsidized child/elder care, etc) the net effect of the salary decrease might not be as noticeable. Ultimately, this is a very individualized decision you have to make - one that can benefit from perspective from a trusted friend or advisor with whom you are comfortable sharing the detailed realities of your current personal financial, health (mental and physical), and even career situation.
Try to negotiate an improvement, meet in the middle or an agreed increase within x-time as a condition … evaluate whether NewCo will be better WLB and lean into what your gut instinct tells you.
How much of a difference in your life would the pay cut make? Cause you maybe take up the offer and work for them for a few years since you expect to like the experience better, and then decide if you actually want to go ahead and look for another opportunity that you find more exciting. And regarding the break idea, how long can you afford to go without a job? It's not exactly the best job market so I'd be a bit concerned going out on a limb like that.
No, please don’t take a cut. It is always a journey to crawl back up. Don’t do that to yourself intentionally. Don’t run away from something, run towards something. Do a proper search. If this is what you can land without putting in the work, imagine what you can land once you do put in the work.
You’ve answered your own question bc your post starts with; “I’ve been very unhappy with…”. If you feel it, so do they. Chances are you’ll be pushed out so GRAB this oppy with both hands and mostly with your 💜
