I've been working with the same company for a year now, and they just sent me the extension paperwork. Before I go ahead and sign it, I want to ask for a pay increase. I've done a good job, and the workload has definitely gone up, so asking for a raise seems reasonable. Is that something contractors usually do, or should I just be grateful that they're renewing my contract?

I’m not sure what industry/line of work you are in, but I was a contract employee with the same company for 2.5 years. I requested and received a pay increase twice during that time. I based my request on increase of workload and performance. It’s worth a shot! Good luck!

It doesn’t hurt to ask and try and negotiate more. But normally contractors are hourly. So if the workload has gone up you should be compensated for that because you are working more. So I wouldn’t think that alone would be justification for an increase in your rate.

Shouldn't be any harm in trying. They're clearly happy with the work you've been doing, or they wouldn't have renewed the contract. You might not get what you're asking for, but I highly doubt you'll lose the contract for asking either.

Make points about how well you’ve been doing. What you’ve been able to accomplish in the past year, too. Give them a reason why they should pay you more.

The worst they can say is no

.Most companies cover this topic in either the initial employment interview or in the employee handbook.
Its no longer about whether you "have done a good job"
it's about company policy. CHECK IT AND SEE.

What's the best form of compensation to ask for and why?

My employers' CEO just announced that they just received $7 million from investors. He wants to use that money to offer incentives to employees that hussle and drive more revenue for the company. We're not sure what those incentives look like yet, but here are some post-announcement rumors from my co-workers:

Cash bonuses, raises, profit-sharing, company equity, 401k match, etc.

I’m interviewing for a marketing manager role at a company based in SF. I’m genuinely excited about the role and the company but we’ve yet to discuss salary. I expect to be asked at some point, but my research has given me a VERY broad range. So I’m here to do a bit more research. I’ve got 5 very relevant years of experience and will have an associate manager directly reporting to me. Are there any marketers out there who can share their salaries in similar regions and experience levels?

Are there any fundamental differences between a salary negotiation during the start (applying for the job) vs. Salary negotiation during a performance review (you’ve been employed for x time and looking for a raise). I’m in the latter and wondering if there are any maneuvers that are different I should be doing.

Currently I work for a small company that does the construction of small cell utility poles and roof top sites for the major cell carriers like VZW, T-mobile, AT&T and so on. I am a project coordinator but I do everything under the sun. Created project tracker. Submitti bids, sourcing material, negotiating price on materials, handling post construction inspections, scheduling sub contractors, notifying stakeholders, coordinating with construction managers - property owners - building management.

Do you still have opportunity to negotiate salary when you’re going thru a recruiter and they tell you the range upfront?
