I've had "graphic designer" in every bio of mine for a while now. I've not landed a job yet, so do I just... change it to "wanna be graphic designer" or something? I mean, I graduated from a graphic design program but nobody's hired me yet. I'm like "Schrodinger's designer" right now.

You are trained and have the skillset of a graphic designer. Don't discredit yourself just because of this economy. You have the skills, now you just need to find the job.

Just design stuff. All the stuff. Posters, book covers, wine labels… rebrand a company and design a brand book for it. All spec work. Load up your portfolio and knock the socks off of anyone who looks at it. I’m in the process of hiring a jr designer right now and cannot believe how sparse the portfolios are. The work doesn’t have to be real, just show me what you can do.

like

“Real” as in hired. Paid work. Still original work, designed by you.. just as spec.

I wish I had some words of encouragement. But graphic design is a competitive field. The market has more designers than it does JOBS. What's worse, remote work gives employers additional options for saving money. I highly recommend diversifying your skill set as much as possible. In a few years, AI will replace design jobs. It's just a matter of time.

Get your foot in the door at a sign shop or vehicle graphics company doing installs - It sucks but it gets you an "in", In a year you could be bumped up to a jr. designer. Turn over rates are pretty high in the sign industry so a warm seat typically shows up pretty fast. You will also get hands on experience installing the work you eventually design. I started out at a 3 man shop and ended up running the whole storefront after a few weeks.

like

I agree- I work at a sign shop really good hands on experience. I learned how to run the printer/laminator/plotter and have been doing that for the last 4 years. Never a dull moment with the variety of projects unless it’s slow which this year we’ve had some lull periods.

However, Gotta find a new job soon because my partner got a new job and we want to relocate.. the job hunting is sparse and a little anxiety inducing.. I even went back to school to get my degree in graphic design so I could have the legitimacy of having a degree since I was self taught. I have almost 7 years of experience.

like

It’s hard to start. Have you looked into one-off or short-term projects? Sometimes, those are great just to have some hands-on work experience.

Josh,
I’ve been a designer for over two decades. The work has always been the same. The only things that have changed are the titles. (ie Graphic Designer > Visual Designer. Visual Designer > Creative Strategist, Art Director to Sr. Designer) and business landscapes. What you realize once you get in anywhere nowadays, is that the titles don’t technically mean anything. Or at least they are obligatory. They were just a form field that an HR manager somewhere had to plug in in order to get the post up. The reality is that if you are a designer / creative your duties and detectives are always scaling. New technologies and platforms to solve new and novel problems in new and novel ways. Faster / Cheaper. Roles and titles change with a companies business strategy which needs constant calibration. This is all to say - doesn’t really matter what you put down as your title as long as in your series of interviews you can articulate how you use your design thinking brain to creatively solve problems. This is also where a killer portfolio of use cases pays dividends. In-house or at agency, established brand or startup - Business and design go hand in hand. Modern business is fluid, pivoting, scaling, calibrating so design has to go along for the ride.

Hi all
I started out as a graphic designer. Worked for about 4yrs in different roles. Then i started a digital design role for 2 yrs and then made my transition into ux. i have been in a ux role for 5 years. But i want to steer my career towards something more creative. Like in 5-10 years I wouldn’t want to be a specialist or a ux director. I d like to be an art director or creative director. I love branding & marketing but also product. Would love something that allows me to do both?
