No, it's worth signing up for a new card for the bonus and continuing to open new ones. x2 with your wife. Regular spend gets you nowhere unless you're a big spender.

Depends on the airline you are fondest of, the miles / pts per dollar rate of each card, and the categories that you typically spend on. I like the flexibility of Chase and the diversity of partners. Some airline cards will accelerate the rate you can get status on their airline, so if that’s important to you and/or if you’re flying less and need that accelerator, then I think it makes sense. Otherwise, I’d stick to something broader.
I do everything by % return.
Sapphire is 4.5%+ done right, but you have to use them before downgrading and it’s only good for airlines (hotels don’t honor status on 3rd party bookings). But you can do other cards like US Bank, Discover, etc. to get 2% min and 5% selected with no annual fees to boot. A hotel or airline card is only good for its intended purpose and isn’t usually as valuable, coming down to <3% with consolidated spend.
