I’ve spoken to a few people who have dropped out ad school after putting together a decent portfolio and landing a job. Are there any benefits to staying in ad school for the full 2 years?

I’m in London, so I don’t know if this reply will be relevant to you but it seems like the primary advantage of ad school is the professional network it provides you with. Top ad agencies in London seem to be exclusively staffed by creatives from two schools (Watford and SCA 2.0 with the odd Lincoln, CSM and Bucks grads).

It’s a sort of old boys network. They look after each other and there’s definitely an advantage to attending Watford or SCA, if you’re talented that is. It’s not a golden ticket but it’s a good start.

I didn’t attend ad school, neither did my partner. It’s become a key part of how we differentiate ourselves from our competition and gets us meetings and raises eyebrows. Especially the eyebrows of ECD’s / CCO’s, but mid-weight, senior and even some younger CD’s are suspicious of us - as they all went.

To me, If you’re talented and have the strategic rigour, conceptual thinking and CRAFT SKILL - something sorely lacking in new entrants - then the sky is the limit. The industry needs new fresh, bold talent. Seriously.

Sure thing. That’s genuinely the nicest thing anyone has said to me in months! Life ey

If you get a job, I’d leave school and save the tuition money. The whole point of ad school is to get that first job. Once you’re at a good agency, you’re on your way. Good luck and enjoy the ride.

👆🏻 Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner. Great advice

There is no oficial degree and there is no need to stay for 2 years, but the network and the opportunity to intern at 4 big agencies will help you land a job at a good agency. If you work hard, you will end up with a nice portfolio and maybe even some produced work from those internships. Btw, that’s how I got my first job, one of my teachers was an ECD and offered me a job before graduating.

likesmart

Yes, if you stay and continue to do internships, your network will grow. As far as the classes, I think real life experience is more valuable...but if you don’t have a good enough portfolio yet, stay in school to work with other students on award briefs (I go to MAS too and I’ve only put like 1 thing I did for class on my portfolio)

like

Nope. I definitely couldn’t be where I am today without it, but they are a for profit school and accept everyone. The only benefit of staying through the second year is internships or the chance to work abroad if you’re interested in that. I left after my second internship through them because paying FULL TUITION while i wasn’t attending any classes was fucKin ridic. Get what u need and leave 👋🏼

like

Networking. Only drop if its for a great agency. I've seen great people drop for a so-so agency and then get stuck for years.

like

Nope. If you can get a good job, run with it. Don’t add $15-20k more debt. If the opportunity is there, take it.

like

Only benefits to me are networking and internships. If you land a job before graduating then yes, I would drop out. But keep in mind if you ever want to go client side, depending on where you go, they may want you to have a degree.

helpful

Do you get an actual degree in MAS? Personally the whole point of ad school is to get a good enough portfolio and meet folks to land your first job. But if you need a degree, that might be a different story.

like

It’s just a certificate afaik. Most people at MAS have already finished a Bachelors Degree though I’ve met a couple of ADs who haven’t. I’m in the CW stream and already have a BA in literature 📚

I’m a proud Miami Ad School dropout who left after an internship for a full-time gig at an amazing agency. Network, network, network during your internships. Get the creative directors (and mid-level to senior creatives) to look at your portfolio. Hit up creatives outside of your agency for coffee or drinks and ask them to give you a book crit as well. You don’t need to pay for the full two years of ad school if your book is in good enough shape to get a job.

Wondering what people think about my situation. I’ve been offered a role with a company. The job description didn’t mention college degree as a requirement. On my CV I have a section listed as “Education” and under it I have “Business Studies” with the university name and the 3 years that I attended the course (2.5 to be exact). It’s a 4 year degree and under this I have my High School equivalent with the years I attended there. The education wasn’t mentioned in the interviews. Continued below.

I've never worked on anything for TikTok and hope I never have to. TikTok is from hell. I was on it one time for about 10 minutes and could feel myself becoming mentally unwell in just those 10 minutes. The human brain is not designed to deal with the sheer amount of sensory overload that app gives you. I'm pretty sure TikTok is one of the main reasons we are constantly hearing about how much Gen Z struggles with mental health.

Are there any agencies where creatives actually have good work-life balance in LA, SF or anywhere else for that matter? Like no weekends or no working more than a 40-50hr week? Or do I have to go in house for this? Or do I have to leave advertising altogether?
