I’ve worked with external recruiters before, and sometimes it’s hard to tell how much they can actually influence the salary conversation with the company. Do you negotiate directly with the recruiter, or try to talk comp with the hiring manager when possible?

Why would a third party have any leverage whatsoever in the comp conversation? Talk to the hiring manager directly.

The only way a recruiter is helpful on the comp front is in filtering out opportunities that don't align with your needs.

Every company Ive worked for, we’ve only negotiated with the recruiter, not the candidate, never been an issue.

They don't influence the decision at all. They are just presenting the facts back and forth. They really don't have a say in it. I would go to the hiring manager when possible.

So, this depends. In some cases, if the recruiter is also the account manager for the client company that’s hiring for the role, they may be able to have a conversation with the hiring manager to inform them of the facts around the presented salary range. For example, an account manager may present industry relevant market research combined with reasonable estimated salary range requirements from the pool of candidates selected for the next stage (interviews) for that position. This helps to support the fact that the salary range is too low. Often times if the salary is too low (esp for certain specializations, industries, or seniority levels), the majority, if not all, of the best candidates will back out. This is something that I discuss with client companies early on, so it doesn’t create further issues down the line. If it is just a recruiter who solely focuses on candidate submissions for the role, they wouldn’t have much say. But honestly, bringing it up to the recruiter and the hiring manager doesn’t hurt. Even if the recruiter doesn’t have much influence with the hiring manager, the account manager can be able to relay that info to the hiring manager as well. Hope that helps.

Currently I work for a small company that does the construction of small cell utility poles and roof top sites for the major cell carriers like VZW, T-mobile, AT&T and so on. I am a project coordinator but I do everything under the sun. Created project tracker. Submitti bids, sourcing material, negotiating price on materials, handling post construction inspections, scheduling sub contractors, notifying stakeholders, coordinating with construction managers - property owners - building management.

I’ve been approached my by company that one of our large clients (who im currently project managing for) is looking for a consultant of sorts, and if they hire us, I’d be the first person asked to take on this consultant role. This isn’t something my company typically offers and would greatly change the scope of my role. Has anyone ever taken on a role like this? If so, were you able to negotiate a percentage of the consulting fee? Or was it a bump in salary during the project?

My husband just received a job offer on an opportunity he is really excited about. It would be great for his career and they are giving the 15% jump in base he asked for, however they won’t share what the target bonus amount would be. It’s an executive director position, so I would assume it’s a decent target bonus, but without that in writing it could honestly be a gift basket at the end of the year. Is it a red flag for them to not share this? His total comp could be less at this new job…
