Job posting: 55k-75k
me: Applied even though it’s low bcuz i’m desperate. Receives feedback for phone interview
Recruiter says that my last work experience is EXACTLYwhat HM wants. Recruiter also points out I said $85k on my app, and the HM is REALLY wanting someone between $60-65k.
HERE LIES THE PROBLEM!!!
Why not post the job at $60-65k.
You want experience but choosing to low ball the talent 😡 I am already lowballing my skill set from $90k down to $75k now you hit me with $60-65k.

The low balling feels like a secret meno went out and across tge board for fte and contractors. Tech recruiters were at $55-80/hour and kept seeing $35-40/hour. I waited and 12 months later, saving depleted, UNEM is a bridge to gap and depending in your state, higher than what's out there. Take a look at your expenses. It's not just money, it's state of mind too. Perhaps you explore opportunities, definitely negotiate or propose contract to perm and show them what you can do l, see if you like them and maybe you take more responsibilities and show them your value. Take a hit and build it back up, even if it takes a couple years. I got that advice from someone in IT who went through same experience. Good luck

Because that’s the range or salary band. They most likely are looking to make sure you have room to grow in that band and/or there are internal equity issues that they are factoring in.

So I pointed out to the recruiter that the posting mentioned $70-75k, he said he knows but the HM is really trying to get someone at the $65k range. Plus the recruiter shared that of the hundreds of other applications received, they didn’t have the specific experience that I had, which means less ramp up time. That in itself should have been enough to warrant keeping me in the already low posted salary range. So my gripe is why NOT post it at $60-65k?The way the industry is right now they would have still gotten folks to apply, however they try to short change experienced and talent recruiters with number of years experience. Internal equity? This is a contract job the cost of living is through the roof, so even 70-75k is not really the amount I would receive due to taxes at the end of the day.

If it’s a job that can be done by someone with some experience, sometimes they are willing to train them for the additional skills they may need and hire them with a lower pay, rather than hire a turnkey candidate for the extra 10-20K. It sounds like they either have a low hiring budget or they distribute more profits up top and pay less to regular employees. Not a good compensation philosophy either way, it will attract subpar talent and probably has turnover issues.

like

Absolutely, they see that housing and inflation are off the roof and the student loan payments have restarted for most people. They’re definitely squeezing as much as possible for as long as they can before good talent either becomes disenchanted and drops out or underperforms to the point that it affects profits. Overall though the entire salary values need to change, and I see it being a problem across industries. $60K used to be a good salary a decade ago, now the same job must be at $80K to maintain the same standard of living.

Where is this job (location)? I've seen companies post the range, because they legally they have to, however the budget is a whole other story. They may post the range, but do not have the full budget. I know, I know...this is ridiculous, but this is what happens. For future interviews, you should ask them what their budget is (not just the range).

I asked him what the budget was, that’s when I was told the HM is hoping to get someone at the $60-65k range despite the posting showing $55- 75k.

Hey i'd just be happy with the fact that the recruiter here still took the time to have a conversation with you about the salary. The majority of companies today would dismiss you immediately if they saw a $20k disconnect on your salary expectations.
