How often do you have reviews? Annually or every 6 months? If you have one coming up I’d bring it up then and in a way that references that you just want to make sure you’re making market rate. At this point Fishbowl it seems like is becoming a valuable place to reference or Glassdoor as well.
Regarding the raise you may want to have ready why you believe now is the time.
I'd also make sure to calculate any revenue, especially new revenue, you have brought to the firm. When it comes to raises dollars and cents are important.
Start looking for a new firm. One of two things will happen: 1) you will either receive an offer you can leverage to receive the raise you deserve, or 2) you will find someone who values you from the beginning (I recommend you start and don't look back).
Yeah, you’re still mansplaining.
I’ve been at the firm for 1.5 years. We are not “allowed” to discuss our salaries amongst each other, so I can’t just say “wtf, why are you screwing me over like this.” To be clear, I’m not saying my coworker doesn’t deserve the money—just that I think I do, too.
Um, you are allowed to talk about pay amongst each other. You're not management. See NLRA
The reason they don’t want it discussed is to keep the pay disparity and wages lowered. This is the exact reason we need laws to require the full disclosure and transparency. To expose the discrimination.
Politics? Im super left but ok?
Are you the same level with the same amount of experience doing the same thing?
I’m in a Similar situation with a male associate at my top 100 am law firm. We both graduated the same year and he’s making $20,000 more, same rates, no book of business, and he is not even doing substantial similar work.
Gender discrimination is alive and well.
I personally wished we were more open to discussing salaries in our peer groups. I understand each firm values different things and may have reasons for pay, but when firms discourage discussing salaries among associates it does no more than keep us from asking for or getting what we may deserve.
This. I would certainly whisper with my peers in this situation!
Unless you know why the other associate was given a raise it’s hard to presume that the basis for the raise was improper. While I am not saying that you can’t rule out sexism, favoritism, etc - perhaps you should consider the following: 1) clerkship experience is extremely valuable and firms will often pay considerably more for those who have it; 2) maybe he asked for the raise and you haven’t; 3) perhaps he had another offer and used that to negotiate.
You can test the market if you think you’re being undervalued at your current firm.
Because it sounds like there’s a disconnect - they think they’ve adequately valued and compensated you while you think you’re worth more.
This was literally me at my previous firm.... an associate who was on his way out of the firm for another job had no problem telling me he left because the firm wouldn’t give him a raise.. we both got hired at the same time, from the same law school, with the same experience... he told me how much he was making and it was 25k more than me... I brought it up with my supervisors and HR... 3 days later I was let go.
So they were willing to lose two people at the same time because of their salary issues? Wow
Sounds like they are already being discussed. I’d raise the issue again and ask that it be reevaluated especially if your numbers back what you are saying. You can do it without mentioning the other associate’s raise. A few attorneys at my firm (10+ years each) have only gotten 2-3 raises over that time and they only got them because they were persistent in asking and follow up. All people that are “highly valued.” I had a similar experience.
I had a situation like this a little over a year ago. I’m a 15 grad and I found out two 17 grads were making more than me and had been at the firm for months whereas I had been there for years. I also generated my own client base and 50% of my work was my own that I brought into the firm. I demanded a raise and when I was told no, I immediately started searching for a new job and preparing to leave. I eventually left and have since doubled my salary. You’re better off leaving. Loyalty is a one way street as far as employers are concerned. Nobody will look out for you like you.
Do you bring in cases for your firm or have they? Aka are either of you a rainmaker? In my eyes it’s all about production.
If this been asked, apologizes for the redundancy, but how did you find out? If it’s the associate telling you, it may have been embellished. Either way, from reading the comments it does sound like you should bring it up to someone. Ask how raises and bonuses are determined. I asked this year - as some paralegals in our firm were getting $8-10k without making hours - I exceeded hours and received $5k. Can’t complain but didn’t seem fair to me. Found out a wealth of knowledge and I’ve been assured by equity partners and the head of my group that the process will be re-evaluated for 2020.
