Hi fishes! My spouse is planning to go to India but we would need to get her visa stamped before coming back. I see that getting appointment is such a huge problem right now. Can we get her visa stamped from a different country? In this case, we were considering Qatar, she grew up there and has her brother there. For what it’s worth she qualifies for Dropbox in India. How do I find out if Qatar works in our case?Deloitte

At least now the E3 gives you 60 days to remain in the country if you lost your job. A few years ago it was a miserly 10 days :( If you don't get a new job before the 60 days is up, make sure you pop out of the country and re-enter on an ESTA to buy yourself another 90 days. (Or push for a B-1/2 tourist visa to get up to 6 months - but you'll need to visit the US Consulate for this and a pretty convincing holiday itinerary so they don't think you are heading back to job hunt). You get in so much trouble if you overstay your visa by even a day!
When they laid you off, did they mention visa status or connect you with their immigration attorneys? Ask hr to do that ASAP. If they didn’t mention job placement services, ask them about that too - resume writing help, job search support etc. Take advantage of LinkedIn to find recruiting contacts at other agencies and start reaching out. These things take time. Hope you got some severance to hold you over if even for a brief period
Sorry to hear, OP. If you’re keen on returning to AUS/NZ, DM me for intros to Clemenger folks.
This happened to me in June. It’s stressful, but not an impossible situation. Within the 60 day grace period you can apply to switch to a tourist visa without leaving the country. Talk to an immigration lawyer ASAP and get informed so you can then focus on the job hunt. Good luck!
Keep your head up buddy. Meanwhile following this thread.
Ask them to pay for an appointment for you to speak with an immigration lawyer. I don’t know if Aussie visas can transfer but I was able to transfer my H1B when I was laid off.
As mentioned above, 60 days to get a new job, and then you could leave and enter on an ESTA (although I don’t know how border security would feel about that). Your best bet will be to get a new E3 not try transfer. When applying for jobs let them know how easy the E3 is. Good luck! I think it’ll be a bit easier since you’re physically in NY
Get your immigration status sorted first. Then envision action.
Go back to Australia. The US is a horrible place to live right now. I would love to move to Australia.
