Just got reminded how I once bought my own external monitor and brought it to the office as an EY tax staff almost a decade ago. Can I hear other people's stories of their firm being laughingly cheap.

I brought one to client site when I was an intern. Spent more than half of my internship there and when I left, I put everything in a big box and carried it as I just got fired on the spot. Sweet memory!

Firm didn’t want to replace a broken keurig in the kitchen, because it was originally donated by a partner back in the day. Pretty sure another partner donated a new keurig to replace the broken one.

Once had to print something that had to be paper-filed that night and my home printer wasn’t connecting to my work laptop. After two hours of some person remotely accessing my computer trying to fix it, the overseas connection dropped. With no way to get back to that same person, I went out and bought a new printer, installed the driver myself, printed the form and drove it out to the post office around 10pm. All due to the lack of a decent wired connection.

@crowe1 there’s a post office in Boston whose window hours are 6am-midnight 7 days a week…hours more limited on holidays (it’s the one by south station)

Eta: I just checked and NYC has several post offices with Sunday hours but none as late as this one in Boston - maybe it’s a big city thing?

When I was at KPMG, a long time ago, I was told to ignore the per diem, and we got $25/day when travelling. Breakfast and lunch were provided when I was at training; if it wasn't training, I was expected to stay at a hotel that gave free breakfast. I normally ate lunch out when in the office, so I couldn't expense lunch either, when travelling on firm business.

Sounds like people need to read the rules better.

Guy in my group refused to use the desk monitors and only would use the small travel monitor (in the office). Never understood it.

If your an experienced staff or senior with hedge- fund experience and want to move to Dallas, DM me to discuss discretely. Honestly great team. Turnover has been low for last 18 months at 10%. Compared to 40-50% in other places. Crazy hours feb-apr, 40 apr-jul, 45 in Aug, maybe 50-60 that last week of aug/ early sept. <40 post 9/15. We have a need at the senior level to fill a gap. Seniors help is needed everywhere so if your interested, come cash in your chips!

First-year tax staff that started end of Q3, and just had my first year-end performance evaluation meeting. Still a blank slate in terms of tax experience, but I honestly do have a slight interest in international tax. Brought it up and I was given some names to find some work opportunities in that area. Besides SALT, any other specialized areas I should try to get some experience in? Also open to any tips and tricks to help tailor my workflow and experiences for the months to come.

Do you all see a compelling future in your tax career? I’ll go first, I don’t see a compelling future working for a large PA firm in the long run because you have to work more as you move up. However, I do see a compelling future by using my knowledge and skills to open my own firm/business and work less hours as long as I make enough money which is $75k, or if I do work long hours, it’s because I want to.

I interviewed for KPMG on 11/15 for a Senior role and the HR emailed me on 11/16 that everyone liked me but they think I should be hired as an Experienced Associate. I had a call with the HR on 11/17 wherein we discussed about my salary expectations and the HR said he will get back in a day. It’s been more than 10 days and multiple follow ups but still no response. I don’t think I was rude while talking to the HR, I just told my current salary and asked for min. that no. Did i miss the chance ?
