“I’m afraid I underestimated the scope and responsibilities of this role when I provided the original estimate. Now that I have spoken with the hiring managers/my peers/leadership/etc I realize that I’d have to have a more competitive compensation package” - would work well when countering
Hindsight being 20/20 I never answer this question, I always respond with “I’ve not heard enough about the role yet to know what I’d expect to be compensated.” Sometimes they’ll offer a range, other times they push - just stick to your guns. I used this when I was going to ask for $85k total comp and ended up getting $135k total comp.
Definitely stealing this line!
My advice would be to wait till an offer comes across. At that point it’s up to you to take the risk/effort of saying the offer isn’t as competitive as your were hoping
Depends on how valuable you sell yourself. I was in this same scenario and asked for 90k initially but realized I lowballed myself. I had a follow up discussion with the recruiter and said that based on my skill set I was looking for 140. They met me at 120k. FYI I only have 2.5 yoe and was talking to other companies which gave me leverage.
If you have reasonable justification for a salary ask dont be scared. Most companies won’t not move on with you if you are a good candidate but have slightly high salary demands. Fight for what’s yours and if you’re good enough they’ll find a way to make it work
I think another thing that helps given that you work at a large company is to justify the ask partially by the other benefits your company may offer that the other does not. For example, gym memberships, health insurance, 401K match.
Since it was just a screening, I'm sure you'll still be able to negotiate for a higher salary once you have an actual offer. Best of luck to you!
Thank you everyone! You all have been so incredibly helpful and have made me feel significantly less anxious
