I am on interview 25+ for a firm currently. It’s ultimately as important to you as to them ! Depends on the comp / seniority but definitely not unheard of. Just because market is hot does not mean people should rush in making stupid decisions.
That is ridiculous. What it tells me is that this hiring manager and/or group is indecisive which is a major red flag and will most likely be reflected in their working environment. For a decade, my job was to do due diligence on portfolio management teams (manager rating and selection). One thing I learned is that my instincts are almost always correct after the first 2 meetings I would have and the other meetings beyond that were just a confirmation of my instincts. I remember a head of research at a very large, well known equity shop telling me that the last analyst they hired when through 37 meetings with various members of their team. There is a difference between being thorough and just being difficult. And as Jim Carey says in Cable Guy, “those who hesitate, masturb$t&!”
What company is this? 30 interviews sounds like a whole lot of time and energy to invest in trying to get a job. I’m applying for an IB Associate role and I’ve had about 8 interviews so far and that felt like a whole lot. ☺️
Prefer not to share the name of the company for anonymity purposes but if you’re in IB I think you won’t come across them anyways
30 definitely sounds a lot. An entire department doesn’t have to interview a candidate to figure out the right one.
It’s impossible for so many to have the same (positive) opinion about one candidate to be eventually hired.
This almost seems like a survivor series
For additional context, as per their own words the whole team consists of ~10 people. The math isn’t mathing…
What could you possibly be discussing in 30+ interviews? If you can’t figure out if you want hire someone after a handful on interviews…
Agreed, in my experience after a couple interviews there isn’t really new info coming up, it’s just having similar conversations with different people. It can be useful for me as a candidate to meet the people I’d be closely working with prior to accepting the offer but that’s never going to be 30 people (not even on the biggest desks on the street let alone a small fund).
What actually happens in the first 29 interviews that you need a 30th?!? Might as well just do the job yourself with the time you spend interviewing
If it's not a dream job, it may not be worth it.
That is absolutely nuts to have a hiring process that long. They are making it about an investment and is this person truly committed to wanting to be here. Personally - I say stop wasting my time or I move on. If you need 25 interviews to figure out if I’m a good fit then something is incredibly wrong with your process.
My current job (which I got last year...also a good job market) was posted for 6 months and had a similar number of interviews. My title is only Sr Analyst and I'm the most junior person on the team, albeit I'm in corporate development which definitely expects more qualifications than something like marketing for a entry-mid level role (so really depends what the job is).
25+ interviews is a lot. And several months sounds like a ton too but depends on how you define the word several. 2/3 is fine but 6+ is also a ton to expect a candidate to sit around for.
You mean they interview about 30 people? I would think that is about average.
That is a no for me. You want me to basically jeopardize my current job taking off so much time to interview and I may or may not get this one.
I wish my ex company would have put even half that time in to replace my manager. They may not have hired someone with no Commercial experience and no Management experience which created an even bigger dumpster fire than we already had and alienated their loyal team members to the point of losing the entire department.. Unfortunate for all involved.
I guess it depends on the reason for the need. I would say normally that does seem excessive, however everyone is job hopping now (I get it… look out for you) so multiple interviews to be sure the person is qualified, serious and dedicated - makes sense - also…. If the department is in dire need of more help as well as a bit of restructuring in order to catch up and stay that way, I would want them to take their time to find the very right person.
Our CTO didn’t even have that many interviews. That number is absurd.
When you say 30, do you mean 30 individual interviews or are any of these groups of like 3-5? If the former, sounds like you would have met the entirety of a small firm!

I wouldn’t know, the guy just said ‘30 interviews’ and I withdrew after hearing this ahah
