Lately I’ve noticed I’m the person people come to when they need help analyzing data or figuring out methods. I’m glad to help, but it’s starting to eat into the time I actually need to finish my own projects. Saying yes keeps relationships good, saying no protects my work. For people in research roles, how do you balance helping others without losing your own momentum?

Stub year in a free market firm frustrated about hours. Everyone was complaining about being slow last month, but it seems most passed 100 hours and I only got 60. I’ve been doing everything mgmt says to do but I’m making no progress in getting work. I am fairly green in academia (< 1 year) and I want to shift to an area of research which I always wanted to do but never could as a Ph.D. student (because of conflict of interest).
The issue I am facing is that due to lack of my documented research experience in this field (read, lack of papers) I am finding it very hard to land any grant and reviewers keep saying "The PI hasn't demonstrated any experience in said research" blah blah.
Any advice on how to overcome this?
