Lately I’ve noticed I’m the person people come to when they need help analyzing data or figuring out methods. I’m glad to help, but it’s starting to eat into the time I actually need to finish my own projects. Saying yes keeps relationships good, saying no protects my work. For people in research roles, how do you balance helping others without losing your own momentum?

Omg I’m similar in my team. I will take things on but if I really can’t finish on time I will voice that. Or say yes I can help but I won’t be able to start until …

Don't let your own work suffer. There is nothing wrong with having to set boundaries and say that you don't currently have the capacity. It might be worth talking to your manager and letting them know that while you are happy to help others, you would like their opinion on how you should be prioritizing your own work with assisting others.

I make sure I’m not around all the time
I work from home whenever I can
Or find a conference room to camp out in
People can’t eat up my time if they can’t find me

I’ve noticed that HR, when explaining why a candidate didn’t get the job, tend to lean on “You’re great, but we had candidates with more experience in [skill relevant to the job].” I do believe this is true in some cases, but it can’t possibly be for all of them.

HR folks — what feedback have you obscured by offering that line instead?

I've submitted my latest paper to the largest journal in my field, but it's taking forever for them to review it. I feel like they're just stalling me because they don't want to publish it. But if they don't publish it, then who will? And what happens if someone else finds out about my findings before they're published?

I am fairly green in academia (< 1 year) and I want to shift to an area of research which I always wanted to do but never could as a Ph.D. student (because of conflict of interest).
The issue I am facing is that due to lack of my documented research experience in this field (read, lack of papers) I am finding it very hard to land any grant and reviewers keep saying "The PI hasn't demonstrated any experience in said research" blah blah.
